|

Hey guys,
so I have a:
Xeon 1231v3 (4x3.4GHz)
2x4GB Crucial Ballistix DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24
Socket 1150 B85M motherboard with 2 memory slots and 16GB max.
I wanted to upgrade to 16GB RAM and just thought about buying one more 8GB kit to keep the costs low but discovered that my motherboard only has 2 memory slots. Because of my huge cooler (arctic freezer) and the microATX build of my motherboard I can't install those big fancy memory modules or any faster memory modules than 1600MHz
Option 1:
Buy 2x8GB Crucial Ballistix DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 and sell the old 2 on ebay.
Option 2:
Buy random 2x8GB DDR-1600 CL11 modules that fit below your cooler because the latency isn't important and you can save some bucks
Option 3: Buy a used mainboard with 4 memory slots and buy additional 2x4GB DDR3-1600 Crucial Ballistix CL9-9-9-24 and sell the old mobo on ebay
Option 4: Buy a used mainboard with 4 memory slots and buy additional 2x4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 from any brand and sell the old mobo on ebay
Option 5: Buy a used mainboard with 4 memory slots, buy 2x8GB DDR3 with XXXXMHz and CLX latency. Sell your old ram and motherboard on ebay
I guess buying a new 1150 mainboard doesn't make any sense..
BTW will my xeon profit from higher memory speeds? On the intel ark page it says 1333/1600MHz

I can't use them on my current mobo. Would have to buy a new one for them. So you say option 5?

no he wont, the xeon with that board cant use more than 1600mhz. oc isnt intended and does not work. 1600Mhz is the maximum! only the older xeons could be overclocked and the ram too, with the haswell xeon 1600mhz is max, doenst matter which board etc
buying a new board is not worth it. just sell your old dimms and buy 2x8gb ddr3-1600 cl9
just get those: https://geizhals.at/crucial-ballistix-sport-dimm-kit-16gb-bls2cp8g3d1609ds1s00-a739120.html
should fit easily, cause no bullshit cooler stuff which is useless either way

Mobo chipset doesnt support more but apparently the cpu neither. So even if I buy faster memory and faster ram it won't run faster as the CPU won't utilize it according to Janz.

I can also buy another b85m with 4 ram slots and just add 8gb of the same ram. costs the same as the 2x8gb.. nobody is going to buy that used 16gb ddr 3 ram off me anyway :/

Tho he can surely use more than 1600 Mhz on another Board even its not supported doesnt mean its not usable. My 4790K only supports 1600Mhz aswell and i have running 2400 Mhz without issues (with the right Mobo).
So, my advice would be more like to get rid of the current mobo and buy a used one with higher Memory frequency support and get yourself some 16GB @ 2400 Mhz RAM. Therefore you save some Moneyz on the CPU. I just upgraded myself from 8 to 16 GB a couple of month when the prices were low and i dont regret it.
The Point is to sell your Mobo+RAM and get a used one for the same price with better support so youre only stuck with the costs for the additional RAM.
Therefore Option 5 !
@ Pax: Why should he do that ?

I can sell you my Mini-ITX Mobo cheap (I have the same CPU as you), it has 2x DIMMs.
Because I wanna switch to Ryzen 1700 for my NAS so I can off-shore x264 encoding to it entirely or partially.
This is the Mobo: http://www.gigabyte.de/Motherboard/GA-H97N-WIFI-rev-10#ov |
Thanks man, but my board has exactly the same specifications with the only difference being that I have a B85 and you have the H97 chipset.

Oh.. Option 6: i7 4790k 4.4ghz + MSI Z97M GAMING + 16GB HyperX Savage for <300€
Is that price fine?

Pumpy, what RAM Speed doesit have ?
Tho even if its 1600 again id say its still a decent deal forless than 300 bucks and you should upgrade it. Then sell your old stuff and you should have onlypayed 100-150€ bucks for a good setup with OC capabilities.
Dont think it can go any cheaper than that.
@ Pax: i dont, but Pumpy asked for an upgrade and not an exchange without benefit

price is right pumpy, every other options would have been worse

but not with the fucking xeon! the memory controller is part of the cpu and that cant be oced at all (ok it can by max ~200mhz via blck but that is a different story)
pumpy did the only correct thing. replacing the board + the cpu for an i7 haswell would have been plane stupid

No office or workstuff, I have my work lappy for that. But I do some 3D rendering from time to time.. or after effects. And games nowadays just hog memory As I'm not going to invest in a new gfx card without doing the full upgrade route ( @mister_s) and the 3.5GB of VRAM of my GTX970 are tiny for anything above high settings I'll just settle to install the games to SSD and put a lot of RAM into the machine

Sorry Janz but youre just ignorant, surely it works as you only need a capable Z87/Z97 Board for that. Use XMP Profile and the Xeon will run with it.
Not supported =/= not working
@ pumpy: Then i woudnt go for that slow 1600er RAM and definetly take 2400er RAM if you want to use that Rig a bit more (especially actual games) since higher frequency these days does indeed give higher fps.
Sure its a bit more work with reselling the other stuff, but it pays off.
Here are plenty of Valid Results from people using that Xeon on OC Capable Boards with Ram Running higher than 1600 Mhz.
So Janz, you still wanna tell the tale about it not working ?
And no, the i7 Version would be imho the best option since he would`ve payed only a bit more as he does now for the RAM you suggested him alone.

it WAS possible, on a few boards with older bios versions. same goes for the all core turbo (not even a z-board needed). but intel forced the manufactures to patch it out
