The strange case of Sniper Ghost Warrior 3, a game that beneath dozens of layers of pure undiluted trash, preserves a heart of g̶o̶l̶d s̶i̶l̶v̶e̶r copper. With the various patches, the technical side of the Orly engine has seen improvements, though its roughness is still there, and in general it's something that never really looks particularly attractive which is a constant burden to carry given that its 10 year old grandpa Crysis is still there, looking down on it with disgust. This ain't my grandson! (Needless to say, the optimization part definitely needs more work as well - I have to play on medium details in order to maintain 60ish fps, a trademark).
I've been focusing on the main missions only, since the Ubi-like Far-Cryesque open world adopted here is as interesting and dynamic as a graveyard, trying to bear the cheesy writing that could easily be part of an Eastern European Bond C-movie from the early 90s, but despite all the junkiness, sometimes the game can provide some moments of genuinely good sniping galore, along with the infiltration jobs like a sneaky kurwa Rambo.
The first thing that anyone should do though is start the Campaign on the new difficulty, called Challenge Mode, which permanently disables many HUD elements and the mini-map (some minor ones can be re-enabled on from the options), the drone no longer gives the silly tags and enemies in general are slightly more reactive (well, "reactive" - the AI is still pretty damn bipolar and sometimes the patterns are just hilarious), heavy armored enemies also can survive chest shots and so on. That's mandatory for this game, since not having the hud infested by visual cues is the main and perhaps only source of fun.
The rudimentary panther CQC works similarly to the Metro games, both stealth and gunblazing are doable and not terrible (the guns feel alright, arcade but not the Cowabooty kind of arcade), the sniping itself is decent, and some open areas give nice Stalkerish vibes..for one minute or two, until the magic goes away because of the consolish and simplified nature of the entire thing.
Giving the isodemo a ride wouldn't be a bad idea, since when everything clicks it's not completely abysmal. A massive improvement over GW1 and 2 (but then again, that doesn't mean much really), even though going open world wasn't a very good idea...to put it mildly xD
..because that's the main problem, and a pretty damn serious one too, a deadly sin for a sniping game. It's still present with the 1.3 version as far as I can tell (happens almost every time the distance is >250m):
Yeah draw distance prevents truly long shots since actors fade out pretty quickly although for some reason there's a few here and there that don't fade out at all allowing for shots upwards of 600+ meters distance though it's pretty silly hunting down those few NPC where the developers likely just forgot to set a LOD value or whatever just so you can feel a bit like a sniper and not some close-quarters soldier with a marksman rifle as a backup.
Return to Georgia with an additional single-player campaign to Sniper Ghost Warrior 3, telling the story of Robert North. Fight your fears in the face of a powerful threat: the rise of the infamous 23 Society.
“The Sabotage” single-player campaign DLC will be available onSeptember 5, 2017 as a part of the Season Pass for Sniper Ghost Warrior 3.
I started development on this mod following the release of the 1.4 patch for SGW3 on the 5th of September. It was a decent patch. smashing bugs and improving load times. But it failed to properly address the single biggest tech/design issue in the game; one that has plagued it since launch. That problem is NPCs disappearing, and failing to appear until the player is close to them. Like a very mild version of Homefront: The Revolution's spawning issues. The developers had promised they were looking into the issue. And as far as I can tell, they did make some attempt to solve it. But it is was still an issue. An issue that was composed of multiple niggles around the same key issue.
If I hated Sniper Elite 4 (it felt far too arcadey and was fast paced as well as being third-person) am I probably going to hate this too? Or is this a little bit more immersive being as it's first person / slower paced?
I realize that SGW3 launched in a really shitty state, but I'm assuming they've fixed it up to the best of their ability now. Does the game-play redeem it any?
I'm just so goddamn jaded that 60GB, even as a free yarrr, seems like too much of a gamble now'a'days!

It's pretty casual, the above mod does solve the problems with AI characters only being visible from X distance though allowing for kills above a few hundred meters.
(There were a few on one of the games levels that were probably set incorrectly and didn't fade out allowing for some really long range kills.)
There's also a lot of close combat where using the sniper rifle isn't going to work very well and the overall story is a bit like a B action flick or how to describe it.
The environments are pretty nice owing to Cry-Engine 3 but there's not much to do beyond picking up collectibles and running into the occasional AI patrol in-between going to the HQ (Hide out or what to call it.) where you use the laptop to toggle the next story or side mission.
Completing missions and collecting stuff unlocks more weapon accessories and new guns, I believe the .50 can even do some small dismemberment effects on a headshot and one even allows for a silencer though you'll be using a variety of rifles too and of course there's a bow as well.
Not really sure what they're singing but the main menu music is a bit different too.
But yeah overall the game isn't too complex in terms of difficulty though you can customize a few parameters although for some reason they lock several of them unless you play at the higher base difficulty level, wish it was fully customizable separate from that.
(There's bullet drop, wind and enemies reacting to shots but since it's from a pretty close range most of the time it's not all that problematic though it's nice to have.)
EDIT: There should be plenty of media available hopefully at least some of it without the whole 1/4th of the screen being the authors face and cringe commentary throughout the entire video with some questionable choice of custom music playing.
(Which already limits things a bit but then the true challenge of finding someone who's actually a bit good at the game too is added to that mix.)
Yea, there was plenty of media available, but most of it was either pre-release hype reels and previews, or immediately after release reviews. Not many people have "followed up" after all the DLC and patches.
Think I'll give it a skippity skip - thanks (and Ixi as well) for the mini-review.

@Immunity:
I haven't played Sniper Elite 4 yet, but definitely this Ghost Warrior 3 doesn't bring much when it comes to sheer realism, it's fundamentally a Far Cry 3-esque title with the addition of sniping physics/dedicated cinematics and a considerably less dynamic open world. Take that as you will.
It actually gets more immersive though if you play it on the new Challenge Mode that disables the distracting HUD elements and markers (a must really, pretty much the only way to play for me), and also make sure to download the mod posted by Bob which should solve one of the game's biggest (almost game breaking) flaws involving the faulty respawning system.
Despite the patches there are still bugs, AI and performance issues left, but if such 'roughness' doesn't annoy you, it's not a terrible game in my opinion as far as consolish shooters go, just a giant wasted opportunity.
Anyone knows how to deal with the savegame problem? Running some latest 1.4 repack (most downloaded) and the progress isn't being saved. Any real solution (I've seen the bullshit on YT already)?
And plz don't ask me why I am actually playing this

First we want to say thank you for your patience and support that you have given us throughout the year.
The Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 project has been the most difficult challenge we have ever taken on as we’ve worked tirelessly to fix bugs, release DLC and now we’ve almost completed development of the Multiplayer part of this project. We’re very sorry that we couldn’t make it before the end of the year but rest assured that we have done our best to make sure you won’t have to wait much longer.
We are happy to announce that you will FINALLY be able to download the multiplayer update on January 26th 2018 on all formats, worldwide.
Here’s what the Multiplayer update will bring:
- Three game modes:
--- Bounty hunter, which will test your survival and risk managing skills, more risk = more reward!
--- Sharpshooter, which will require high reflexes!
--- Classic Team Deathmatch, all in!
- 4 maps, each one is set in a unique environment and they vary in size
- 2 additional exclusive maps included in the Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 Season Pass for a total of 6 maps
- Over 10 weapons that will give you unique possibilities
- Over 10 gadgets to help you in your quest for victory
- Over 15 different characters to choose from with various outfits for different environments
Was multiplayer planned since or before release already?
If not, i think they are just wasting ressorces, as i doubt enough players will be interested in it.

EDIT: Doesn't seem like it's going to work very well though because you actually have to aim to hit things.
But anyway, the conclusion here is that there are no performance gains at all between the Denuvo and the Denuvo-free versions of Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3. The game still suffers from performance issues and we are pretty sure that CI Games will not be able to resolve them. After all, this game came out in May 2017 and performs exactly the same, eight whole months since its release.
