I was so hoping for a singleplayer campaign...bastards.
This has been their goal for years now. It started with trying to get in on World of Warcraft's racket with SWTOR. And remember that DA Inquisition was originally meant to be a fantasy version of this, and only got changed to single player mid-development.
Exactly, it was long overdue unfortunately, I ain't even mad to be honest. They can do their Destiny-like thingy with a pinch of Division, add microtransactions on top of it, employ seasonal passes, downgrade it to hell and back, either way this is something doomed from the start as far as I'm concerned.
One could argue that every single BiowarEA project is doomed these days, but that's another story
Lol. Clearly you have never played any sort of online game before. Cheating is rampant in every multiplayer/online game.
No I mean cheating as in just modding save files is not a thing. of course you can always cheat in pretty much any game. The problem is how easy and how much of your playerbase cheats.
It does look great and could turn out to be a fun game to play with friends, just like Destiny was. But that really depends on things that can't be seen on a short, heavily scripted "gameplay" vid.
I still don't expect any wonders when it comes to writing.. They have to cater to their new playerbase now.
Also, by definition a co-op open-world game focused on mmo-style missions and looting cannot have a strong narrative focus. That kind of structure promotes aimless roaming about doing one thing here, another there... there isn't a good framework in this type of games to push a cohesive narrative that goes hand in hand with the level design and game progression.
So even if the writing is good, it will be butchered by the very nature of the game, imho.
BioWare's Anthem is a "science fantasy" like Star Wars Definitely not like Mass Effect
Quote:
BioWare's new IP, Anthem is set to be "science fantasy" more like Star Wars rather than "hardcore science fiction" like Mass Effect, boss Aaryn Flynn has revealed. In an interview with CBC, Flynn spoke about how the game compares to the company's previous work.
"It's in a genre we call science fantasy, very much like Star Wars, very much like the Marvel Universe. You see a lot of amazing things happening but we don't worry too much about why they are happening or how they are happening; the science of it."
BioWare is not a rookie to the "science fantasy" genre, having developed the RPG Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the popular MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. But what makes it different than the Mass Effect series?
"Mass Effect is more a real hard core science fiction IP. [Anthem] is much more about just having fun in a game world that is really lush and exotic and really sucks you in."
In other words, it is looking likely that Anthem will not have the nitty-gritty science explanations that the Mass Effect series had, such as the codex. Instead, there may be stronger resemblance to Destiny. Destiny was initially pitched as a "mythic sci-fi", with a similar disregard for logic. EA stating that Anthem will be "the start of maybe a 10-year journey for us" also echoes Bungie's decade long deal with Activision. With Destiny 2 being released in September this year, there will definitely be parallels drawn between the two, whether BioWare likes it or not.
I never thought the day would come where I'd open up a thread regarding Bioware's next project and react with the same apathy that's normally reserved for pixelated indie titles or racing games.
I was wrong....

Anthem is a MMO made by the studio who couldn't get the gameplay and progression right in any of their games unless it was DnD or heavily inspired by DnD (KotoR). It has multiplayer greatness written all over it.
Corey Gaspur, a lead designer on Bioware's Anthem, has passed away.
Quote:
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our friend and colleague Corey Gaspur.
He was a member of our team for over nine years, and worked as a designer on many of our titles, including Sonic Chronicles, Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect 2 and 3, and most recently Anthem.
Corey was a talented designer and an even better person. We offer our condolences to Corey’s family and everyone that knew him.
The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.
