Gameplay wise it really is on the light side of things. But I also thought that the story was very compelling and it motivated me all the way through the game.
I think if it didn't have the added videos, I would probably have been bored of it and never even finished it, to begin with
Like I said some time ago, this is a movie with a game added to it, rather than the opposite.
And that's fine by me.
Also, while I can and do play for their gameplay alone (heck, I spend a couple hundred hours in transport fever and now I am starting with factorio lol) when it comes to "shooters", I am really tired of the genre I guess. UNLESS there is a real interesting story that makes me want to see what happens next.
And like chiv, games like Doom just don't do it for me anymore.
is it weird that i cant imagine nudity or drugs really contributing or making the game better, and therefore dont care?
its weird.. when we hear about things cut from a game before its released, we go apeshit about censorship ruining games. and yet when i hear about it after the fact, and realise it wouldnt have made the game better, i dont care about it.
was such a fucking good game though i wish theyd put it on decent discount so that i could buy it on steam and play it again. we'll probably never get a sequel, its so rediculously fucking sad.
Remedy: The Traditional AAA Single Player Experience Is Really Expensive To Make, Costs Went Up 10x
Quote:
Remedy Entertainment is moving away from the traditional AAA single player experience, though they’ve vowed to retain their trademark focus on storytelling. Their next game (codenamed P7 and published by 505 Games) will have cooperative multiplayer elements to try and enhance replayability.
We’ve known as much for a while now, but Remedy Entertainment’s Head of Communications Thomas Puha revealed a bit more on this shift in an interview published today on GamesIndustry.biz. In particular, he noted that the costs to make a “traditional AAA single player experience” akin to Alan Wake or Quantum Break have now gone up tenfold while the audience is still essentially the same.
Quote:
The reality is the traditional AAA single player experience is just really expensive to make. The expectation level from gamers is really high in terms of how long the game is, what sort of features it has, how good the production values are. All those things are very expensive to do. And if you go back 10 years, you could still say the console market is roughly the same size. In the end, the audience you’re selling to is relatively the same size but the cost of making the game is ten-fold these days. So that’s an obvious problem.
He then reiterated that a “one-and-done” type of game also frustrates developers from a creative standpoint, as consumers tend to play those games very quickly after the creatives have spent years of their lives conceiving this fictional world.
Quote:
From a creative perspective, even when we made Alan Wake, it was like we spent all this time creating the characters, the universe, the rules and everything. It’s a place where you want the player to spend a longer period of time, and that’s hard to do in the traditional single-player space.
It is unclear whether we’ll hear anything concrete about P7 (which will be fully multiplatform unlike Quantum Break and Alan Wake) this year from Remedy. The Finnish studio is known for its relatively slow pace of development – seven years passed from Max Payne 2 to Alan Wake, and then six from Alan Wake to Quantum Break, which launched two years ago.
Well it's their fault to make a game in 7 fucking years. Decide and plan. Then make a game...
Games like Dark Souls or Dead rising1 were made in 2 years!!!. Only 2 fucking years.
They both looked amazing at the time (still do imo), have amazing timeless gameplay and lots, lots of detail in the world. And they "probably" costed less than 10/15$ million each but the number is unknown.
While fucking Gta iv costed 100million and V costed 250million... but those are rare examples of very pricey games generating huge revenue anyway. And You can really see the money spent - at least with gta iv at the time. Holy shit that game was impressive.
Games like Witcher 3 with budget of 80$ million and taking almost 4 years to make are somewhere in the middle/high ballpark but would be considered rather tame budget nowadays AAA.
While HL2 costed 40$ million btw... had ground breaking physics, animation and graphics tech.
Gears of War costed only 10$ million featuring new engine and being a game with innovative gameplay at the time.
Gears of War 2 12$ even though it's much bigger "not every level is the same" game.
Bioshock, 15
Crysis 15
So there was time about until 2011/2012, when You needed max 3 years and like 20$ mu to make a good game. Now they need hundreds and 5+ years since the game have to appeal to everyone and then have amazing multiplayer and dlc career. Fuck

Aren't Remedy well know for the high cost of production? I remember Max Payne 2 had a huge budget for the time which turned out to be 5-6 hour game. All their games since 2001 clock at about 40 hours of gameplay combined.
One word, Hellblade.
Get the fuck outta here with this bullshit, if they wan't to develop some multiplayhurr battle royale clone in order to try and get some easy money just go ahead with it, no need for this silly shit.

Yeah, it sounds like they're testing the grounds, finding excuses and justifications to chase a future focus towards quick 'n easy profits coming from the online world (that they've been already planning for a while: https://www.remedygames.com/remedy-goes-multiplayer/)
They could just go back to the more classic single-player formula by granting quality storytelling and *proper* gameplay if they wanted to, without wasting millions on unnecessary Hollywoodian awesome button-powered cine-experiments, silly merging of expensive TV-like shows and famous actors, and focus on what really matters in an action game. It could still be successful if done right, it doesn't have to be pompous AAA oomph, there is a huge market for single-player games of all caliber and there are many examples showing that it is possible to achieve successful results. Of course though the mild efforts/maximum profits bro-combo is very alluring these days for many companies, with few exceptions
lmao they are soending the investors' money on hyper expensive bullshit and marketing, everyone at the top eats with golden forks, they release the game exclusively on win10 store at first, it has high requirements all around and they now whine that it's too expensive to create a "traditional AAA single-player experience".
These mongoloids made Max Payne 3 a chore to play by bombarding me with cutscenes in every single room I dared to walk into ... still salty about that fiasco. Muh traditional cutscenes interrupting gameplay single-player Max Payne experience......
100 videos about Max hitting the booze, yes he is a drunk I got it, get to the gameplay and stop wasting other people's money to make a proper game.
This is why investors try to hit the jackpot with games that don't need a mocap studio, lipsyncing, voice actor divas etc.
Just started playing this yesterday. It's OK but I haven't decided if I'll go all the way. Seems really repetitive even though I've just played the first act (after the first long fmv movie). I was kind of surprised that with everything maxed it mostly holds 60fps but there are these weird occasional stutters where it drops down to 20 then jumps back up to 60 solid. Might try killing vsync and moving it to the SSD and see if it's a texture streaming issue or something
Oh, they developed the first two only. Well, my bad, I stand by the points I made. Most dev teams are wasteful with their resources and the result is games that need a way higher budget than they should. And they don't give a shit about proper testing or adding a fov slider for example, while throwing millions at external mocap/voice/FMV studios and marketing bullshit.

Played on SSD on the highest settings and still had weird frame drops from ~60 to 25. Bad optimization. Also couldn't finish the game because of all the visual effects and shit on the screen. After a couple of hours in I was having a bad headache which never happens to me. The story and characters were alright to the point I played. It had that Remedy vibe from previous games.

Yeah, moving this to the SSD didn't make a bit of difference. Tried exclusive full screen with/without vsync, borderless window, etc. With everything maxed at 1080p(I turned film grain off because I hate how it looks) I can have 120-140+fps and then at random times it just drops to 20 for a few seconds. With vsync it's the same. solid 60 frames and then down to 20 occasionally. Doesn't seem to matter if I'm in a new area or going back through a section I was just in, doesn't seem to be tied to the number of things on the screen. It just happens and it's annoying. Piss poor optimization. Oh well. At least it was cheap from a humble bundle so no worries.
I kinda agree.
The overlong seasure inducting cutscenes EVERY corner. I mean there was no 5 minutes of interrupted gameplay. The shooting and physics were amazing. But the cutscenes seasure style is not cool to watch again and again. Since they are not skippable I could not bare to finish second playthrough
but yeah - it's rockstar. Remedy made games are amazing except for QB. MP1,2 and Alan Wake are some of best games ever

Finished this game. A solid 7/10 for me. The story was pretty good and it was what kept me in. The game mechanics, well, it sucked for me. It was weird, time suspended but the fights were pretty fast, maybe too fast for my taste. Played it on difficult and last fight was a literal nightmare for me. Also, I didn't like it at all. I've expected a good fight with someone with equal powers as our Jack Joyce. Those area damage effect converted the gameplay in unplayable for me. I tried it for about 30 times? maybe more. At the end I've somewhat managed to escape from that red blast (dunno how) and managed to shoot, one time, and that was. So fast I didn't knew what did I do to escape.
I was literally on rage because every fucking time you have to deal with the two waves of enemies with an awesome accuracy. So I had to parapet myself in the corridor back there at the end and it wasn't fun.
Spoiler:
The cutscenes in this game were a + for me. Even that the story told there had little to do with the main story, so I have mixed feelings at the end. The Liam Burke story ended with a strange feeling for me, I expected more. Also de Martin Hatch plot ended in a undetermined way. Maybe they had a second part in mind?
At the end, even that my gameplay lasted for about 21 hours (4 hours or so trying to stay alive in the last fight) I had the feeling of watched a movie rather to kept playing.
so it's a 7/10 mainly for the interesting concept, rather than the game itself.
