so anyone played the new version?

I played a few hours. They've fixed/improved a lot of the original annoyances like turn times taking too long. They have also made the base game a bit harder, though you still end up pretty invincible about 2/3 in.

Played this for a few hours, game is good, even if it feels low budget its very atmospheric. BUT there is one thing that annoys me to the point of just quitting the game.

Only medicine heals you; ok no problem im good with that. Everytime you get healed, it eats a portion of your max hp so if you get healed several times after exploring a map, you will end up with maybe half of hp (like my main char is now from 110 max hp, through healing it has 54 max hp now). Getting back to real max hp requires sleeping at the shelter and one night of sleep only heals !!! 15 hp , so you need several nights of sleep; its ok you might say but the game forces you to go out everyday in the state to explore and gather mats and food and so on, so you will have to battle things, so your hp will go even lower and this fucking loop fucks your your game.

Never had a big issue with that. Mind I always got decent armour early on which reduces damage you take massively.

You can also build the infirmary which boosts recovery time iirc.

I know some of these budget western "visual novel" type games have had questionable art but this is almost as bad as that gender/bender furry/bestiality game. Razz
(That game is popular on Steam though going by reviews at least so eh maybe it works. Very Happy )
(For research purposes that would be this game: http://store.steampowered.com/app/321060/ )

Dear lord, Dead State wasn't perfect by any means and had a troubled development, but it could be damned satisfying, in a pseudo-simulative way. One of the very few single-player zombie games that managed to nail the stressful sense of being in the middle of the apocalypse, with a huge potential for future projects.
And instead

A lot of older adventure games had casts filled with incredibly strange and off-beat characters, so that part isn't that strange. It was even part of the appeal, seeing characters you just won't see elsewhere.
But the art is incredibly amateurish and nothing I've seen in the trailer makes me believe they have the writing to backup the characters.

Dead State was pretty good for a first game and it offered something I wanted in a zombie game (an outpost that was mine, to upgrade, to make choices about my survivors). It sucks they're now reduced to... This.
I guess they have no money left and are now making games with a skeleton crew.
"There's only 3 people left. I used to draw sexy lizards on Deviantart, Marla writes fanfics, and you're the shitty boss who never works. What should we do?"
"I dunno, make a visual novel. At least one weirdo will buy it."

Worth playing this? I've only played 40 mins. Seems pretty retarded. I was asked to fix a fence, found some parts and a toolbox, went to that board and clicked "repair", but the only thing i could repair was a fridge, so i clicked that. then i got the message i fixed the fence. great writing..

Is this what it's like, go to different parts of the town, shoot zombies, get parts etc.? Any interesting characters to meet / fight? Does it get a lot better than the initial 40 mins?

That sadly was a similar experience i had. Sad
Game looked really promising at first. But after playing a bit, all the rough edges got more and more noticable.
The story didn't interest one bit, same for the characters.
And the combat system wasn't really fun either.

The combat is ok, i can stand it if the rest is good, but i guess its not Sad

The portraits are so hilariously bad that i get the impression these guys has put in actual effort into making some stuff really bad. I guess it feels a bit like This War of Mine if you take out all that made that game very atmospheric. The music annoys me too.

The game definitely is a tough cookie, especially the first hours which are slow and the writing is as basic as you can get (almost parody-like Razz). It never gets extremely interesting but there are better characters and stories later on, even though it's nothing too impressive or imaginative, as the narration is just an opportunity to start doing what the game does best: exploration, the strategical scavenging, dealing with zombies and/or hostiles (and also being careful about not making too much noise) and resource management to keep the people safe/happy in the shelter.

It's a very very long game, even too much in my opinion and it does get inevitably repetitive since you end up doing the same things over and over, reason why I actually never finished it. I still did appreciate quite a lot what they achieved here despite the roughness and balance problems, a low-budget RPGish zombie apocalypse simulation which provides an atmosphere different than the usual.
I still haven't tried the Reanimated version though, which supposedly fixes some wonky stuff, but it's a shame that instead of a potential refined/expanded Dead State 2 we'll be getting..that thing above instead. Okay

Wow I just checked the HLTB for this and it really is 50 hours average to complete the main story only. Really seems too much for such mediocore game.
