Hmmm, maybe this isn't the game to boycott to make a statement, people
People not buying beccause it's too expensive right now for what it is, I understand. I pirated it, too. But people are trying to take revenge on Gaybox by burying this game and complaining about petty problems.
I was hoping that if this went well, maybe we would one day see a Blood remake. That one is also using the Build engine, imagine how cool that would be.
Anyhow, the renderer in this looks very different from the Polymer renderer in eDuke32, it is subjective which one is the better one, the Anniversary edition has very pronounced/contrasting lighting. But I think the movement+aiming may be better in eDuke32, hmmm.
Also I think multiplayer is broken in eduke32.
So to make a statement we shouldn't just outright boycott their games but pick and chose which ones we want to buy? That's not how it works.
You won't be making a statement regardless. In order for a statement to be perceived as such, an organized boycott must exist and no such thing exists (and certainly not across all their games).
So do whatever you feel like for yourself rather than how Gearbox will perceive it, because they won't.
Personally I wouldn't pay for most of Gearbox games but that's mostly because I don't like them and don't play them.

Seems to be using DirectX 11 going by the Steam reviews, also seems to have poorer mouse support to where you can't use any extra buttons which the old Duke game and it's eDuke port can plus it forces mouse acceleration.
Engine wise I'm not too sure how eDuke and it's Polymer OGL renderer is doing though being mod friendly and having the ability to switch the sound files and even graphics is a plus I suppose.
(The "HRP" project at least last I saw was a bit mixed due to it's age and several older assets when the eDuke engine was less developed but it's probably still active.)
Obviously licensing problems are also a issue where this version does not contain the other extra episodes though I think it contains the main official one at least.
(I haven't been keeping up with this at all, looks like the Megaton edition was pulled completely although per Steam functionality existing owners can still download and play their copy of it.)
megaton was published by 3drealms, and yes licensing issues blabla hence it was pulled (but ofc not deleted for owners). this piece of crap is only the original duke3d episodes + 1 new episode (8 maps). its not worth 20bucks for only a few new one liners from john st john and 8 maps
@Janz
To be fair, it also has a new renderer, multiplayer, steam friends/workshop integration, new music, a new weapon, a new enemy, a couple of new features like rewind on death, new HUD.

Nah, I know people are always going to buy their games but I said after CM and his shitty attitude I wouldn't give them any money again, which isn't going to change off some shitty cash grab port of a game that came out in the 90's.
I briefly tested the new isoversion since the eduke32 was already installed, here's a small rough comparison from the first level, out of curiosity:
eduke32+polymer / eduke32+polymer+HD texture pack / Duke Anniversary
The renderer is quite different indeed, with added post-processing/SSAO, and the result is actually pretty decent in my opinion, it gives more depth.
Problem is, the shooting itself and mouse controls feel generally more responsive in the eduke (at least they do for me) as VGA mentioned, same for the the default fov. The sounds effects are also very low-quality ones in the Anniversary (thanks Randir for the link, modding saves the day once again ). It's not bad, but it still feels like a fairly lazy Randybox job overall, for that price one would expect more care to be honest.
Speaking of the audio, someone at Duke4 thinks the problem is because Gearbox used the wrong settings when changing all the original audio to .ogg format. So they'll either have to fix it in a patch or we will need to wait for a mod. The one I posted doesn't work for all the sounds.
I don't understand what everyone's problem is with the new recordings. Maybe the low quality of the originals made them more ... raspy, while the new ones are cleaner.
They sound better to me. Probably because I am not a hardcore Duke fanboi
I just thought the comparison was interesting. I think the new recordings are fine on their own, but they stand out way too much compared to the rest of the game's low quality sound.
Updated Duke3D.GRP file to work with source ports, and included original DUKE.RTS file
“Use” button now traces to the crosshair, removing the need to crouch to use low buttons
Widescreen aspect ratios now increase viewport width (rather than clipping height)
Fixed Prima Arena (E5L8) so players can get 100% kills
Improved sound ducking when listening to dev commentary
Fixed “Clear” and “Reset” buttons in the keyboard config menu having their functionality swapped
Pushing up on the right analog stick no longer toggles the run state
Workshop
Fixed Workshop Uploader
Fixed Workshop map display name issues
Bug Fixes
Fixed bug with mini bosses sometimes killing themselves with their own projectiles
Pretty good and needed changes. Too bad I have already uninstalled it after ifnishing the first episode and most of the second. This just made me realize how fluid Doom is.

PLayed megaton edition recently (not on sale on steam anymore) and it's a very good version. Not sure how it compares to world tour.
Episode 3 shrapnel city is still kinda bad but others are classic!
I like playing those older games with 640x480 resolution in windows and then upscale as much as it fits on Your screen with either windows magnifier or the lossless scaling app.
It makes for cool biig old style pixels http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/127079

This one has the best graphics IMO, as it has the best lighting. I would go with this version.

I agree, Duke Anniversary has a few additional shaders/tweaks that add life to the levels (without messing with the original design) - my screens above might give an idea.
The shooting itself is more subjective and I still believe that the eduke32 plays a bit better overall, though the difference is fairly minimal. The various patches have fixed the wonky 1.0 audio as well, so the Randymaster definitely is a good option
Follow that guide, do it in a separate folder. You should try to use the Polymer renderer and change that console variable if needed, the artmapping thing mentioned in the guide, then you'll have the lighting and the normal maps of the new content. I have finished the first 2 episodes with this.
Unless you can put up with the cancer-aids mouse control that the hydrocephalic coders of Gearbox sharted out.
Duke Nukem 3D composer Bobby Prince has filed a lawsuit against Gearbox Software, Randy Pitchford, and Valve for copyright infringement, alleging he owns the rights to music used in Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour without his permission. He claims Randy Pitchford lied (big shock) when promising to "take care" of Prince and his royalties request. According to the filing, Gearbox was fully aware that Prince owned the music, but used it without contacting him and refused to take it down.
As to Valve from a post on Era this is why they're involved.
Quote:
What Valve has to do with Duke Nukem?
Edit - Prince also contacted Valve, he claimed, regarding the distribution of the game on Steam. "Valve ignored a takedown notice, thus waiving any immunity under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and continued distributing infringing copies of the music despite knowing that Mr Prince owned the copyrights in the music," the document reads.
Don't know how the DMCA works but that's why he sued Valve
And apparently the composer worked as a lawyer before?
Quote:
I can believe that Randy Pitchford is thick enough to blow off a complaint from a guy who was a lawyer before he was ever a composer.
Wonder if Bobby Prince owns all the music he wrote back in the day.
Though some of the other comments make it seem like he might have been inspired a bit by other music in turn, wonder how this goes.
(Out of court small payment or settling it that way I guess.)
