|
 |
I have aquired a brand-new SONY DRU-800A DVD-ROM unit (DVD-RW, CD-RW, etc...)
I have installed the dvd-rom unit as a secondary master (IDE 2, master), while having my standard cd-rom unit as a secondary slave (IDE 2, slave). The primary master is my HDD of course (IDE 1, master). Is that good or should I set my dvd as a slave instead?
I ask this because the unit's reading speed is really slow, could the unit be faulted, or should I set the unit as slave??
EDIT: Also, another weird-ass problem Im having, that COULD be a hint of the unit being faulty, is this: Whenever I insert a retail DVD (Star Wars Episode III disc 1 or bonus disc 2, zone 1, X-Men zone 1, Big Trouble in Little China collector special edition zone 1) the reading speed of the various menues and stuff is AMAZINGLY SLOW!!! for instance, when Im on the main menu of SW: Episode III disc 1 and wanna go to the chapter selecion menu, it takes about 20 seconds to change menues. Then after that, on my next windows restart, I check on device manager, and the driver sets back to PIO mode.
Everytime I try to play a DVD on this unit, it sets back to PIO mode, WTF??? please help me.

Slave, master doesn't matter on speed. Seems like a software problem, try a different burning app.
Do you have the slave plugged into the middle ribbon plug?

I have an MSI motherboard with MSI original flat data cables (ribbon cable covered in red protection stuff with MSI logo all over, really thick). On the IDE 2 ribbon cable, each ribbon plug has a "SLAVE" and "MASTER" label written in white. So yes, I have the salve plug connected to the slave one (my samsung CD-ROM unit, not CD-burner, just CD-ROM).
I edite the first post with the second problem Im having when I try to play retail dvds.

I can replace it with another sony unit, same model. It should work good, if you check the sony dru800a specs, its a very good dvd unit.

it would be better to have the hdd and de cdrom drive on the same cable, the hdd as master and the cdrom as slave. Put the DVD drive as master on the second cable. This way you should not have a problem.
You dont have a burner in your system?

Sounds to me like the drive is not working properly and should be returnd. Usually if you misjumper a drive the bios won't recognize it, i have never seen that the access times are high because of it. In what mode is the drive running? pio or udma?

As long as I dont see any retail DVDs, its running at Ultra DMA- Ultra66. I have burnt CDs with nero and it doesnt change, it always stays on ultra DMA.
When I insert a retail DVD and try to run it under powerDVD 6 deluxe, or VLC player, it'd run slow as hell when chaning menues, and next time I restart de comp, it sets back to PIO mode.
So to sum it up, it only sets to PIO mode when I try to play retail DVDs.

Now that is really strange, unplug the other drive on the channel and set the Sony dvd to master/single (plug it to the end of the cable) and check if it still changes bus modes.

That's what Im gonna do. Oh, and I tried several retail dvds on the VideoLan VLC player, and strangely it works great. The DVDs I tried are Mission IMpossible II and Conan The Barbarian Collector's edition.
And I would like to thank you very much for your kind help, you're helping me a great deal and I truly appreciate it, thanks man. I'll get back to ya with the results.

Well, I have set the DVD alone, as MASTER on IDE 2. Still happens the same shit.
I also disabled any virtual devices from daemon tools v4, just in case, but nothing changes.
Any codec or player you would recommend??
I will now try to set the driver as slave.

There is not much you can do now. You could try the drive in another computer to make sure that it's not your windows installation. It can't be the player or codec, you already tried different players, and the codec for retail and non retali-dvd is the same (MPEG 2), the bitrate on the retail dvd's might be higer, meaning that more data is going throught the cable, i guess that's whats causing the problems (wich really shouldn't). I would return the drive and get a new one.

Did that a moment ago. No solution.
But whats REALLY weird is that with the VideoLan VLC player version 0.8.4a (latest) the dvd plays amazing, all smooth and fast when watching movie, changing menues, etc... Which may show its NOT my DVD unit, but a codec conflict or something. I dont know.
Any dvd codec or favorite dvd player to recommend??

so when you run it with PowerDVD it's slow and when you play it with VLC it runs smooth?

Exactly. When I run it with either powerDVD or nero showtime 2, it doesnt run well, or doesnt run at all (with showtime it gives me an "DVD error" message).

Anyway, I left the dvd unit on the sony style store, they will test it thoroughly and get back to me in 3 days with results.

I dont think that's the problem, I believe its a faulty unit. I have taken it back to sony so they can test it and get back to me in a few days. I believe they will replace it with a new one.

this will affect hd perfomance badly as swingman said ,cause hd ata100/133 cd/dvd ata33
NEVER PLUG HD WITH OPTICAL DRIVE ON SAME CHANNEL,especialy with bootable hd |
yes,but when you have two optical drives on the same cable then you get problems when you try to burn a copy from one optical drive to the other...I don't think that the performance of your hdd will have significant decrease if you put the hdd and an opticcal drive on one cable, but I've never tested it to be honest.
All I know is that I've had alot of problems with two optical drives on one cable in the past.

Just a question. What if, after 3 days Sony gets back to me and say "we've tested the DVD ROM unit and its working perfectly, it must be your computer"??? I KNOW that its not my comp, Im not some casual ignorant PC user, I know what Im doing and I take care of my programs and my comp.
Should I demand a brand-new dvd unit?

Can't you just return the drive and get your money back, even if they say it's no dud? This way you don't have to argue with them over the drive. You can then buy a new one elsewhere.

First, I couldnt find a better price with such a good dvd-burner, so I wont go anywhere else. Second, I already gave them the dvd unit for further testing. I trusted them. If I made a mistake, then I will demand a new drive no matter what, and they WILL give it to me.
