People can go to the nearby store and grab an assault rifle, are they able to buy vests, armor pieces for a full set of combat gear as well in these convenient stores?

It makes me think of a dystopian nineteen eithy-four. It may very well become our reality.

If we are governed by people out of our reach that are not directly elected ... or if breaking away from their masonry is a recipe for economic disaster, then maybe.
If each country is governed by its own elected government and there are multiple political parties covering all ideologies, then I don't think so.

I think most of the pictures are from the US (at least they are similar to what I saw recently in the news about that country, except one maybe) and, as far as I know, they have a democracy as real as any other...

Yeah, some serious democracy it is with their two monolithic parties, ridiculous party elections with the delegates shit, systemic lobbying etc.
Also, drawn out, media controlled voting state by state, come on we have discussed this crap in the USA elections thread.
Personally, I don't consider that system a democracy, but instead a pseudo democratic process that is optimally planned for outside influences at every turn. There are dozens or hundreds of points where the process can be manipulated by the lobbyists, media, superdelegates... meehh, just have the fucking vote in one goddamn day simultaneously in all states ffs. What a travesty.
Of course I admit I see things from the perspective of my country's democratic system.
