Hey Guys,

Its been a long time since i built this computer here, too long in fact i7 920 D0, 6 gig and a Gigabyte EX58-UDR3R. Its done me well over the years, but its now y turn in the house to finally get some much needed upgrades. But as i have not followed hardware trends i may need a little help on some stuff.

I have a budget of around £430 this is just for CPU, Motherboard, Ram and some after market cpu cooling. I will be using Scan.co.uk as i have £100 of credit with them.

Here's what i have so far, if anyone thinks i'm making big mistakes or can do better then please do chip in.

I shouuld add i currently have a 770 GFX card but i will be replacing this most probably with an RX480

Intel Core i5 6600K

Gigabyte GA-Z170XP-SLI

16GB (2x8GB) Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX Black, PC4-24000 (3000)

Arctic Freezer i30

Cheers in advance.

Yea, looks like a good cookie-cutter build. Very Happy

I'm not a fan of Gigabyte for mainboards though. Personally i would tend to ASRock and maybe Asus.
I also guess you are planning on using SLI/Crossfire, as you chose that specific mainboard?

I may do sli in the future, i did have back awhile ago with two 560TI's, maybe in the future yes.

Regarding the Gigabyte motherboards, just habit i guess, started way back with Jetway boards then moved to Gigabyte boards as they were pretty much the only boards to buy back eon's ago, and i've stuck with them, as i have "touch wood" never had an issue with any of the machines i have built with them, and that list is pretty long.

If you can recommend something that you feel is better by either workmanship, usability, cost and so on, then by all means, please enlighten me.

just skip the sli thought. sli with midrange cards, i.e. everything below 2x1080 is useless

you might safe up to 20-30 pounds if you choose a non sli z170 board (though you need a z board to oc the k cpu, otherwise it would be even cheaper to get a b150 for example)

rest is ok, though ddr4 2666 is enough and the best price/performance combination. 3000 is to expensive for not bringing any improvement

@MadK9
Can't really help you with the mainboard or even a specific modell. Smile

But if you had no problems in the past with Gigabyte, just stick to them.
It's the same for me with ASRock. Very Happy

@Janz
DDR4 2666 vs 3000 prices are only a few Euros in difference. Might as well just go for the faster ones.
