Honestly, if Microsoft were to suddenly flip a switch and make Windows 10 PCs capable of playing Xbox One games directly? I'd cheer them for that. I really would. I think that would be the absolute best step forward Microsoft will have ever done. No bullshit ports, no stripped down demos, no gimmicks.. just buy an Xbox One game, put the sucker in your PC, install, play.

That is magic. I like that. But we all know that ain't ever gonna happen.

Microsoft could turn every PC into an Xbox

Microsoft is currently working on a secret project internally, codenamed Helix. Kotaku originally reported on the Project Helix name, and the work is designed to more closely combine Xbox and Windows 10. Some of that work has started, but more of it is due later this year and next year with future upgrades to Windows 10. Microsoft wants to enable features like streaming PC games to the Xbox One, but sources familiar with the company's plans also tell us there are greater ambitions to make Xbox One games playable on a PC without needing a console for streaming.

Part of this could involve bringing the full Xbox One UI and system directly into desktop versions of Windows 10. The latest Xbox One dashboards are built on top of Windows 10, so most of the work involved would be customizing the interface towards keyboard and mouse. Bringing the Xbox One UI over to Windows 10 machines would effectively turn every PC into an Xbox One, especially if they're also capable of running the latest console games.

Nah. I love my Win 10 but at work the things arent that simple. There are tons of customers using customized software which is not tested under Win 10 so the result might mean that you need to be prepared for 'shit just got real' situations. Smile So the less they want it the more I'm happy with even if they would still be on Win 3.11. Smile

Windows 10 as an OS isnt bad but the spyware/telemetry completely wrecks it. I know you can try disable this through group policy and reg hacks but ultimately its a futile battle. Whats also interesting is i know of a number of fortune 500's that are now moving away from windows because they consider it a security nightmare. Im glad terms and conditions and telemtry are becoming a serious talking point in the enterprise as i was hoping something would give.

So im wondering how much effect losing big corporates (and developers from where im positioned) is going to effect them in future if at all.

I can see MS forcing all devs to go through their store, much like all consoles do. I'm not sure how that would affect Steam, but I'm waiting for the day MS introduce a mandatory 'Unified Gaming' patch, which locks all uses of DirectX via the Xbox system.

Given their recent history, and the way UWP and DirectX 12 is going, I really wouldn't be surprised in the slightest.

I suspect devs would start adopting Vulkan API much much faster if that ever happened.

Privacy should always been take seriously. However as a daily gamer Win 10 is the best gaming OS atm. Would I swtich to some better alternative if there would be some? Maybe. But if you want to play on PC Windows 10 is way to go. If you don't play on PC then any desktop OS can do the job depending on your usage.

ps. Believing that you are somehow safer on Win 7 than on Win 10 is pretty much bullshit. MS is pumping Win 7 with bullshit KB's as they are with Win 10.

“When we started the project we weren’t aware of Windows 10,” says a source. “We were going to ship on Xbox One initially and then we wanted to come out on PC at a later point, most likely though Steam. But we got burnt quite badly.”

“Without Steam, without other platforms, it was just painful,” says another. “The Windows Store is a giant disaster. It’s on fire. 98% of PC copies of Rise of the Tomb Raider, a flagship Windows 10 game, were bought on Steam. The same is true for Minecraft. That hurt us, too. The store’s a mess; the number of people who couldn’t even install the game from the Microsoft store was… significant.”
...
Besides the technical problems with Windows 10, though, Lionhead’s bigger problem was that for the entirety of Fable Legends’ development cycle, the potential audience for the game was shrinking. Xbox One sales were falling far short of projections. Windows 10 installs, too, were nowhere near what Microsoft had planned. The scale just wasn’t there. And for a free-to-play game, scale is everything.

“Let’s be honest – we make our projections based on a series of assumptions,” reflects a former employee who worked closely with Microsoft. “There are supposed to be 2x as many Xboxes out there as there are right now. There are supposed to be 2x as many Windows 10 installs as there currently are. So now, when we look at how much money Legends could make in the free-to-play universe, you have to halve it. Because we can only reach half the audience that was projected.”

“I thought I was going to be working on a single-player game, a more advanced version of Fable 3,” says one source. “But when they went to get that game approved, the three senior designers who were pitching it were told that ‘you will not be given permission to make Fable 4, or something that is a shadow Fable 4’. Phil Harrison’s vision for all of his studios in Europe was now for service-based games. That’s what he thought was the future of games. He didn’t want to make anything that was a £50 box, fire and forget. He wanted long tails of revenue, even if there was a smaller up-front burst of revenue.”

We are saved fellas
Quote:
A new initiative from Microsoft is bringing the Xbox One and Windows 10 a lot closer together. It's called "Xbox Play Anywhere," and it lets you buy participating cross-platform games once, and own them on both platforms. If you buy a game on Xbox One it will simply appear in your Windows 10 library, and vice versa, and your saved games, achievements, and other information will carry over between the two versions.

As part of the announcement, Microsoft says it's putting a larger effort behind releasing its own games on both platforms. "We've made a commitment to bring our first-party games to Windows and Xbox One," Xbox chief Phil Spencer says. The launch line-up for XPA features some of the Xbox One's biggest upcoming games, including Recore, Forza Horizon 3, and Halo Wars 2. Additionally, several smaller indie games will be included, such as the much-anticipated We Happy Few. Microsoft previously did something similar with the release of Quantum Break — which was free on Windows 10 for those who bought it on Xbox One — but the company says the process is much more streamlined now.

Currently the service is mainly focused on Microsoft's first-party releases, but the company expects that to expand to more third-party-developed games in the future. The complete list of Xbox Play Anywhere games includes the following titles:
    Forza Horizon 3
    Gears of War 4
    Halo Wars 2
    ReCore
    Scalebound
    Sea of Thieves
    State of Decay 2
    We Happy Few
