But that comparison is kinda absurd to be honest.
Oh well.

Better efficiency and performance*
* when CF works as intended. The same applies to SLI.
And it's not like nDerpia is going to let them have the market, 1060 or something like that is coming what, 2-3 months after?

Nvidia can still counter with their mainstream stuff, but at least pricing will have to be similarly mainstream as well.
They mentioned 100-300 USD prices for the upcoming Polaris GPUs, so there is something "bigger" as well. A 8GB RX 480 is one thing, I suppose (200 is for the 4GB one).
Great for people looking for an affordable upgrade, not that exciting for people hoping AMD to put pressure on Nvidia in the high end.

Unfortunatley for AMD the fanboy effect with GPUs is very high, they could offer 90% performance of 1080 for $200 but moron fanboys will still buy nvidia.. Thats just what gpu customers are like.

It remains to be seen if Nvidia actually has something comparable at the same price point, tho.
Current estimates put the 480 at the performance of a 390x. It's hard to compare the 390x to the 1070, in some games the 390x has 70% of the performance, in others it has 90%*. I compared the average and it came out to 83%.
The price of the 480 is 200$. It's guessed that this is most likely for 4gb ram, dunno how much for 8gb. Let's say 230$? The price premium for cards with more VRAM hasn't been that big before (around 20$).
At 230$, the 480 would have 60% the price of a 1070 for 83% of the performance. That's very good.
If AMD were to release a 1070-equivalent card with the exact same price/performance ratio, the AMD card would cost 277$ instead of 380$.
Is that realistic? Probably not, AMD won't offer the same performance for 72% of the price with every card. But it does make me think that Nvidia might have a hard time releasing a 1060 that will equal the 480 while selling at a competitive price.
*If anyone is curious, that game was Battlefront maxed at 1440p. Both games had over 60fps, the 390x trailing the 1070 closely.

There is no way the 480 is at 390x performance levels looking at the stats. At best it'll be similar to the 390 and thus be on par w/ a 970 in most games. If nvidia releases the 1060 as basically a rebranded 980-level card for only slightly more then the 480 it'll be a good buy in the low $200 range - Which is about where you'll find used 980's soon anyways.

Most hardware sites I've seen compare the 480 to the current 390x. The idea being that the numbers seem to be on-par with the 390, but the card being more efficient brings it to the level of the 390x. This might be confirmed by their focus on Doom, where the 390x struggled to get 60fps at 1440p. Since they had a demonstration + id saying it ran great, I would expect the card ran it just fine.
We'll see the final result with benchmarks tho, we're not in a rush. I doubt many users want to "upgrade" to a 200$ card on this forum.

I don't quite get it either. If Nvidia released a 8gb 980-equivalent for 250$, people would call it a great move. It would be seen as Nvidia cornering every market: a 250$ card, a 380$ card and a 600$+ card. One for everyone.
Here, AMD did the same for the 200-250$ range. And a market analysis has shown that this is where most of the cards were sold. They went for the market where they'll dominate the most, then they'll refine it and go for bigger cards. No worry.
I won't buy the 480 since it's not a worthy upgrade compared to what I have, but the card itself seems like a great sale.

Isn't gtx 1080 about 40-50% better than gtx 980 and gtx 1070 the same compared to gtx 970.
Now AMD has a card that is also about 40-50% better than 380(comparing it to 390x)...we are moving in the same ballpark here...are we not?
Then again if you were expecting a high end card... |
I don't mean the product. I think it's okay, probably good deal for those that don't already have at least 970/390. However as owner of 390 I can say that it's not really enough for smooth gameplay at 1440p (not even Doom which they demoed in Macau at 1440p)
On the other hand they mostly target VR users, you know the kinds of people that are desperate to spend 700EUR on VR headset on which they can play 10 games right now, but are not able to afford a graphics card for 400-500EUR, which can support it AND play classic desktop games as well.. But hey maybe there really is market for that. (If they used this as their marketing strategy after the VR equipment price drops, it would make sense, but right now it's just nonsense IMO)
Another disappointment is the NDA and launch after June with no benchmarks before that. They didn't even unveil full specs of that card. Overall I think it's badly marketed product with unnecessary secrecy - They first showed Hitman demo on Polaris earlier this year to keep investors calm, then went quiet for 3 months, now they hold some secret event for press one month before NDA lifts, show few bullshit slides to the public during Computex and now they'll likely go quiet for a month again. This doesn't generate hype IMO, it only makes people annoyed - at least it has that effect on me. Show the product just before it's almost ready. I think nvidia handled that quite well in this regard.

People can shit on nvidia all they want. At least they're putting something out that is actually a decent high-end upgrade. While it's cool and all that AMD is releasing this new card.. I'd never fucking buy it because it's slower then my nearly two year old card I already have. Most people on here have at least a 970 or 390/x so this card is irrelevant to most of us and basically no one gives a shit.

How do you know its a decent high end product? AMD hasn't released their competetor .
So There's nothing to compare it to, but even the product itself has flaws like the thermal throttling issues and the over pricing for ex.

And hopefully AMD will be able to match/top that while driving prices down.

Well I don't think that's very impressive cuz that's what it is supposed to do.
We're gonna have to wait and see I agree. | IMO it's impressive because it's not even the new ti/titan. That seems fairly impressive to me.

I'm more interested in 480X 8GB hopefully at about 300€ tbh. What AMD just showed will, imo, be on par with what Nvidia will have going with 1060s so the competition will most certainly be tight. And thats good for us.
I'm more interested in Zen at the moment than new GPUs, since I'm never in the market for high-end GPUs anyway.

AMDs only real mistake here is beeing late with their high-end cards. But on the other hand, the mid-range usually sells more and they will probably be able to update their Console market and Laptop market earlier than Nvidia.
