The statement sounds believable, but only superficially. There's more than just that line, we're talking about an entire direction, though since that one is the easy target (both to notice, and to "fix") they acknowledged it in order to cease the tumults and bury everything under the sand.
The rest will stay, and we'll be seeing all this again in the future, only it will be subtler instead and masked better (not that the writing will improve in terms of quality, as long as whoever is there now will still be involved), practically a slow poisoning.

I do not see it as out of character. Maybe just crudely written.
Isn't Dark Elven society matriarchy, by the lore?
EDIT:
Those outlines are so awful...

Yes, but the point IS the crudely written shit - followed by those glowing "roleplay" replies such as "You're a strong woman"
What the fuck?

Drow society is a male SJW's wet dream: tyranical matriarchy, where males never rise to a position of power (with few notable exceptions) and are at best used as sex toys.
And to be honest look at Amber Scott, her Dorn/Bhaalspawn yaoi fanfic is the closest she'll ever be to getting any action. To bad she's also the main writer for an eetablished game world. I hope at least The Gaydar's writing will not as amateurish.

Thing is, nobody likes "token" or "preachy" characters. Add to that uneasiness of some people regarding trans, and you get explosive reaction.

I have nothing against trans people (in fact, I watch shemale porn all the time) but I do have something against terrible, amateurish writing - something I lambast in every game I play. And from the examples posted on the Codex, this is one of the worst-written RPGs of all time. Changing or expanding on a few lines here and there will do nothing to rectify that.

You don't have to be a fucking psychologist to understand how much insecurity and frustration hides the first sentence... (Men believe they are masters when they take a woman to their bed [...]].

That's the issue, SOD is choked full of bad writing. In fairness to Beamdog, Viconia was written pretty horribly back in BG2, so that exchange isn't massively out of place.
What they did let you do in BG2 though was rip Viconia to shit when she was being retarded, you could really brutally put her down when she started spouting her drow shit. These type of options seem to be blatantly missing in many SOD dialogues.

Examples of terrible Viconia lines? My memory's fuzzy, I know some of the good NPCs were insufferable (Aerie etc.) but a full evil party was quite bearable iirc.

I'm replaying BG2 soon, so I'll probably have some more specific examples. I primarily remember Viconia having a load of "grim dark ultra evil" lines, and also a hell of a lot of mood swings.
They developed Viconia better in TOB, because you could actually convince her to change her ways/alignment. Her neutral self was a lot less annoying.

Felipe Pepe is one of the few Gamasutra writers I actually respect. He also posts on Codex and generally has very well considered views on most things.

I honestly thought Gama was going to start improving once they sacked The Souse, but nope, Katherine Cross just took up the misandric mantle instead and is.. if anything.. worse than The Souse because she's so insidious. At least The Souse just went on drunken rants which everyone could point and laugh at.

Oster has given an interview - http://www.develop-online.net/interview/beamdog-ceo-we-never-thought-a-transgender-character-was-a-big-deal/0219033
To address some specific points:
| Trent Oster wrote: | | We put an arbitrary limit on our writers for our support characters of just three nodes deep, just to control wordcount. [...] Obviously we wanted to explore her story in a broader, deeper way, but the three-line limitation cut it off. |
So don't include it then. If the character is so minor that they don't warrant more than a handful of dialogue, there is absolutely zero reason to be cramming in some half-assed discussion about their sexual orientation. Unless the author has an agenda to push.
| Trent Oster wrote: | | Personally, I think it shows a progressive world view that we didn’t think a transgender character was a big deal. It was just a character to us, part of the world, helping to drive the story along. |
How does a shopkeeper's sexual orientation drive the story, exactly?
| Trent Oster wrote: | | I firmly believe that there is no ‘they’, there’s no group with a specific agenda. There’s just a bunch of individuals – each with their own sensitivities, likes and dislikes – and the internet seems to package people together. |
Wasn't it Oster himself that went on the Steam forum begging people to post positive feedback in order to counteract an 'organised crusade' against them? That was certainly the narrative his underlings were spinning at least. Hence the "Summon Bigger Feminist".
| Trent Oster wrote: | | We know Baldur’s Gate through and through. There’s a number of us here who have been through the development of the original Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights and other BioWare content – we live this stuff. Individual writers are going to bring different things to your game. That’s why you have editors, who edit content down to make it fit within the overall game. |
So I guess you need to fire your editor/s then.
