Gonna double post now, found out how to improve the performance by quite a bit (On a decent PC, that is).
Answer is textures set to High, disabling AA and using nvidia's DSR.
Basically enable DSR in nvidia control panel, for those who dont know how to:
I just selected the first one on there, and set your ingame AA to none. Looks and performs much better, no more cutscene stuttering, and the game finally looks better in the open world, as opposed to just the two first missions (First mountain and Syria).
Just finished the game with 80% completion, 19 hours, definitely worth it, although a bit more exploration oriented than the first one.

Game is pretty good. Seems like I got really lucky, and I don't have FPS problems (still ye olde 780 Ti).
I'm around 1 hour in, and I can already see the improvements. Solid game thus far.

Yeah..1080p(!)..and more than 4GB VRAM for their crappy textures ROFL..I guess nvidia paid really well to promote their 980ti
It's hilarious how games with better textures than this pos and a huge open world do not require 4GB VRAM for a crappy 1080p resolution and this pos requires..lolwut?

There is some nasty aliasing in this game in certain situations and even downsampling doesn't deal with it consistently. Worst cases are still there even with 3x levels, so I stuck with injected SMAA for better performance.

Yeah you're right, but it's because there's not much to say about the game itself: if you liked the 2013 one, there's a 99.82% chance that you'll like this one as well.
My relationship with the rebooted franchise is a damned troubled one, I can't deny it.
I'm ~8 hours in, on the positive side, this new chapter feels more refined and 'complete' overall than the previous one, something akin to a Tomb Raider+, but in general expecting a change of direction would be foolish at this point, everything is still fundamentally the same. Except for Camilla, she's more mature now and doesn't moan as much as she used to
The writing is still highly forgettable (what else is new xD), but there seem to be more tombs, which is good, although they're considered an optional aspect, a side activity instead of being the focus.
And now the dangerous IMOimo territory. As always, my grumpy side really finds hard to digest the hollywoodian traits of the game (common to basically all the AAA titles out there) . The automated platforming movements and animations (which lack precision) designed to be gamepad-friendly, the constant focus on providing a cinematic experience at all costs, the scripted scenes, the XPallthethings, the simplistic tacked on stealth, you name it.
For me it's the equivalent of watching a popcorn movie, which can be somewhat fun as a timewaste that doesn't take itself too seriously, but it's lacking all the elements that make a gaming experience remarkable.

HAVENT FINISHED IT YET, but i have to say im THUS FAR finding the story pretty unremarkable and... well.. dull. not BORING, just so unsurprising in every way... im realy hoping it has some twists and some intrigue before the end... im currently up to Spoiler: | where i enter the geothermal village thing | , and its just been a very by the numbers story.
its basically:
Spoiler: | theres a prophet who was seemingly immortal, daddy croft was psychotically hooked on finding the artefact, daddy died (im guessing we'll find out it was moider! moider most foul! or maybe it'll actually BE suicide.. the most shocking twist of all.. something being as it appears!), daughter croft takes up the quest, a cult also wants to find the artifact so that they can make a new messiah/god army to purify the world, but theres a backwards isolationist tribe that are descendants of the prophets followers who want to protect the secrets of the prophet. |
so far so dull. Im really hoping we'll find out that
Spoiler: | the prophet was actually evil and the secret they've been protecting turns out to result in demon monsters that try to kill everyone including the tribals who have been protecting it. something like this NEEDS TO HAPPEN else this will have been an utterly boring story, not worthy of the enjoyable gameplay its been given.
if its just 'trinity gets the thing, and then dude or dudette becomes demon god and we have to kill them and their demon army, then i'll be most upset at the sheer lack of ambition. |
as for the gameplay.. so far its fun. I do prefer the first games setting more than this though.. i dunno.. i guess it just turns out im bored by ice... and I liked the set-up of the first game more too.
But this game does have its charms, especially with the quickcrafting system.. while it does make things easier, I do like how it changes the dynamics of combat situations, being able to toss out.. well... lets be honest.. whatever you can grab... whats this.. oh its making a smoke grenade not an exploding grenade... fine, fuck it whatever, *toss* still fun though, sprint-grabbing a JACKPOT! A BOTTLE, ducking down behind cover, quickly assembling a moly to toss, and watching the whole area go up in flames... its fun.
ugh. just wish the story was even remotely ambitious and interesting.

Because I have been living under a rock, what is this asus thing that has been talked about? I see some posts directing to a asus redemption site but
I can't even proceed to the second step there. Any country (even from Asia) gives the error message of "The following process is for Asia Pacific only"
1 and 2 are still amazing.
