A pure talker is the easiest play through. A combat character can be hard until you learn all the combat mechanics.
Whatever you do don't try to cross specialise on your first play through, make either a pure talker or combat character. Hybrids are viable but you need strong knowledge of game mechanics to succeed.

Any way to predict whether there will be a good steam sale for this one? Most reviews make it seem glorious.

The developer seems a bit stubborn when it comes to pricing so I wouldn't expect a major discount until at least next year.
At best you can probably expect up to a 25-33% discount in the winter holiday Steam sales.

Was taking a glance at their boards and apparently there is a lot of talk about their next project, called 'Colony Ship RPG', a dungeon crawler:
| Quote: | The Overall Design
As mentioned previously, we want the CSG to feel and play differently from AoD. The core design (turn-based, choices & consequences, non-linear, text-heavy) would remain the same, of course.
So the new design elements are:
- Party-based. It’s a fundamental change that affects every design aspect, most notably content “gating”. If you have 3-4 party members, most likely you’ll have all skills covered.
- Feats. Feats require character levels (another departure from the AoD design) and will replace (and greatly expand) skills’ passive abilities. Our aim is to offer greater customization of your character’s abilities and builds’ support. So far we have the following categories: General (feats like True Grit or Critical Thinker), Specialist (Pistolero, Fast Draw, Paint It Red, etc), On Kill (Bloodlust, Second Wind), Target (anything related to the target: type, number, awareness, etc - Crowd Control, Duelist, Bounty Hunter, etc), Party-related (Warband, Magnificent Five), Combat (Adrenaline Rush, Headhunter), etc. No filler +1 to skill or +5 damage feats but meaningful feats that fit and strengthen your particular gameplay style.
- Focus on ranged combat. While melee builds will be viable, most enemies will use guns. We’ll discuss it in great details later.
- Focus on exploration rather than working your way up in a faction. While factions will get a lot of attention (see above) and play a large role, you won’t join a faction but will remain an outsider, free to work for and deal with all factions, which fits the setting better as these factions aren’t guilds but different hubs. However, many quests would have conflicting interests and reputation would play a stronger and more immediate role than it did in AoD, so you won’t be able to please everyone for long.
- Multiple-piece armor. AoD had a very basic “body armor + helmet” setup. With the CSG, we want to go a bit further: helmet, chest, right arm, left arm, legs. We’re thinking of cumulative DR against general attacks and individual piece’s DR against aimed attacks. We’ll test this system in the dungeon crawler to build up some experience in this area and see how it works. |

Sounds pretty great
Let the wait commence, may our great grandchildren enjoy it!

It is actually two separate projects.
They are making an AOD universe based Dungeon Crawler and testing out some of the gameplay systems in preparation for the Colony Ship RPG.
From what Vince has said on the codex, they have been wanting to make a CS rpg for a long time and have a lot of ideas.

Haha
It's a very peculiar game, does many things great (complete freedom when it comes to approaching problems, the combo setting/atmosphere/dialogues) but there are also severe shortcomings (the "combat way" isn't the most balanced one, plus the tech involved makes it feel archaic as hell).
It all depends on how much you're willing to turn a blind eye to the flaws and enjoy the merits. I'd recommend trying the yarr version first out of curiosity (cs rin have the latest GOG version - 2.6.0.7 - ~1GB), unless I'm already in the shitlist, in that case I'll ask for a divorce!

The game has merits, the branching nature of the story is of course the highlight, but depending on how you play the game, the main story progression can become nonsensical or poorly explained.
I remember when I played this, at certain points the game would force you to progress (teleporting you to another city without explaining), leaving behind important plot points and characters that I might have missed or held off. When you get to the next chapter, it feels disjointed because what comes before and after have seemingly no connection whatsoever.
I tried playing a swindler who just talk, lie, betray his way through the game, and what I got was exactly what I mentioned above. In the end I lost interest because the story became nonsensical.

So I started divinity original sin a week back but that one somehow didn't click. Tried this one and I'm having tons of fun BUT didn't realize how much of a system hog it is until today when I checked the requirements.
Or more precisely after seeing it run like shit on a C2D laptop with an old nderpia7000 series gpu, and then checking the minimum requirements (4770 for this, really???).
So, anyway, any alternatives for an old machine like this? And preferably like this one, in which you play a solo character instead of a party.

There aren't many games quite like AoD sadly when it comes to pure C&C awesomesauce..it's really unique in its approach. You could try Underrail, it's more of a ghetto Fallout-esque title with classic good ol' exploration, the largest number of tunnels ever and brutal sneaky encounters hidden at every corner (turn-based combat), should run on the caralho machine

Thanks ixi, ended up checking that one out based on gaben's suggestions on the AoD steampage.
I'll set course and sail towards it tomorrow morning
