I think The Thing is a close contender. It has a comparable claustrophobic feeling, but with additional paranoia as anyone could be the alien. Plus, it really holds up by today's standards, including all visual effects. There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in. Truly gone fishing.

Recently I've gone through a rendezvous which included most of the classic movies, and can definitely confirm that the timeless factor is intact (for me). I love practical effects so much.
