Oh and to summarize,

- get attacked once, you lose consciousness and when you regain it you walk "funny", slow and with very annoying visual glitches

- if you find a organic/machine thingy where the icon changes to something like a cross, click it and you return to normal. But they are 1 use only, so if you get hit again, you'll have to suffer the consequences until you find another healing thingy later in the game

- if you don't get healed and you get hit a second time it's game over and you will go back to the last checkpoint.

In short the developers fixed the problem of Amnesia where there was no consequence of death by annoying you with visual glitches and such so that you don't cheese the game and actually do hide from the monsters.

So far I love the game, looks like it'll be my GOTY.

Finished the game. Great stuff once again by Frictional. Also the game is more sci fi than horror although there are some intense moments and also some blood, gore and body horror. The story was also interesting although some of the reviews hyped it up too much IMO. The philosophical stuff is hardly anything particularly new but it is well presented and written. Makes you think though and that is what this kind of story needs to do.

Regarding the ending:

There was some sort of electric panel next to it where I pulled out some wires and it opened.

just alt tabbed to say, amazing freaking game men. the art direction and the mood are amazing. i've been having goosebumps for the past 2 hours pretty much non stop. every scene is jsut drool worthy, sci fi, wallpaper worthy goodness. So Much Win

It's not really a scary game, nothing like amnesia. Nor is it nerve wreckingly tense like alien isolation. Its really all about sci-fi induced orgasms, exploration and soaking in the atmopshere the game throws at you in spades.

I live for games such as this one. Frap Frap Guy

Ok, this thing is driving me insane: every time you get hit/caught by an enemy the game goes into "hurt mode", ie: blurry vision and chromatic aberration bullshit to the max. Now this would be fine if it was temporary... but I've been playing for half an hour now after being hit and the effect doesn't go away! The only way is to get hit again so you die completely and you restart from checkpoint.

Am I to stupid to figure out how to "heal" myself or did I find some strange bug? Are you guys also experiencing this?

You can heal by touching those strange organic things. (Said like that it sounds weird Laughing , but i don't know what are they exactly)

Oh ok, fisting one o' those robotic assholes heals you, got it Laughing I had found them, it's just that I got hit *after* touching the only one that was near my location.

Btw, it's the only thing I'm hating about this game. Making a mistake, especially in a horror game like this, should result in a failure state. It should NOT make the rest of the game annoying to play. That's an absurd bit of game design: annoying the player so much that he'd kill himself or restart the game rather than continuing. Stupid. Plus, some enemies don't kill you after the second hit (e.g., the floating "squids" in the ocean parts) so you can only restart the game or continue with those annoying visual glitches and wobbly walk... drives me fucking mad.

Other than that, however, the game is great. Finally a horror game where the enemy is not some sort of vague "evil spirit" or "ancient being" (from what it appears for now at least)

Well to be fair the healing points are placed pretty much after every enemy encounter with the exception of the ocean floor. Also the wobbly walk is not that bad IMO as it makes it more intense when you are trying to get past the enemy that just gave you a whopping. Lastly, don't diss ancient beings. Anyone else having texture streaming problems?
Quite frequently I get a few seconds of nasty performance as it loads in stuff. Reminds me of unpatched rage Crying or Very sad

Other then that the performance is solid on my hd7870.

I get the same problem, its while entering new areas, or loading a new save game.

Overall this game is great, the sci fi vibe is great, the mystery, the atmosphere ( it plays a lot like alien isolation)

Its like a mix of Prey/alien/blade runner and all those great sci fi's, even though it is bellow water, sometimes you think you are in space. the graphics are much better than their previous games, im enjoying the story so far, seems like a good plot and somewhat original.

also suffered from the heavy framedrops/asset loading but it didn`t make the game unplayable

disable in game vsync guys, and use your gpu's control panel for it+ triple buffering. both nv and amd have great opengl vsync and triple buffering, especially compared to this game.

i had fps drops just staring at empty walls with their crappy in game vsync.

Why does tvtropes call it Genre Busting? Is it really?

It's the "very annoying visual glitches" I talk about here: http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2789776#2789776

Yeah, it looked like it was reloading all the assets and the textures were slowly getting streamed in.

To be honest I don't think there's reason for indie devs like Frictional not to go with a ready made engine, these days not even cost wise. (They would still be able to release mod tools on say UE3/4 right?)

They probably mean it in the sense the gameplay is subdued and it's more about an interactive well written scifi story, therefore it's different from its ilk (eg Amnesia). Plot wise I don't think it's genre busting, but I haven't played much.

They recover your health. I didn't understand at first, since you encounter several before actually meeting an enemy that can harm you.

I had the in game settig on adaptive but now I did what you said. I still get little fps drops from time to time what's different is that when they happen the game handles them much better without "skipping" so much.

When I wake up in the station at the beginning of the game, after the prologue, my fps tanks like hell, to 20-30ish fps. The shadows were on high. After this I changed them to normal, my fps stayed the same. And then I changed them back to High, and my fps went back to smooth 60. Like what the hell....
There IS something definitely weird with this engine that's for sure.

And this happens almost every 10 minutes, the fps just tanks for no reason, and it goes back to smooth if I change something in the options.

Edit: nope, I'm not using V-Sync. Not in-game, nor in nv control panel. This is without V-Sync.
