i really wanted frank to survive for some reason, i guess i just like his will to survive despite the goofy dialogue he's actually a very good character and one of the more unique i've come across in terms of "gangsters"
as for ray, the dream with his father came true. kinda annoying his lieuenant didn't get popped before he got shot the fuck up (fuckin paul raines from 24 annoying cunt) but i guess it was never gonna happen when it's a squad of mercs against one alcoholic with a shotgun & iphone.
the ending wrapped things up nicely but it also leaves a dreaded feeling, it's never enjoyable to see corruption shining but it's the reality of life.
Men sacrificing themselves for their women. How original.
Yeah, it was so cliché and on top of that overexposed that I found myself rolling my eyes frequently during all those scenes. I mean the episode should have been the standard 50-something minutes and I would have probably enjoyed it a lot more.
Police staking out the most obvious place Ray would visit. His son's school. All Ray had to do was to get on that boat and it would have been a happy ending for him and his woman. So stupid. He had already said proper good bye to his kid, why the fuck did he have to go see him again? Poor ending. Frank was more unfortunate in a way not really his fault.
Seriously. Last ep ruined "Ray" ontop of the clichés raping really both Ray and Frank's stories.
I'm probably the minority, but I genuinely enjoyed the finale and the entire voyage (with some bumpy roads in the first half of the season), much more than I thought I would. My interest grew exponentially. Once, there was only dark. You ask me, the light's winning...just not today.
Sad and yet inevitable, to me it felt like the perfect closure. Perhaps some scenes dragged out a bit and the editing job wasn't stellar, but the composition and pacing were on point in my opinion. The sense of involvement was definitely there for me, pretty rare thing to experience nowadays, they managed to pull it off despite some questionable choices.
Dark ending is fine by me, I wouldn't mind if every good character was killed off, the problem was not the events in the story but the very poor and redundant execution in this finale, which just topped the multiple problems the season had, especially in its first 4 episodes.
liked it a lot. ray and frank are very interesting characters.
i agree with ixi, involvement was definitely there.
i just didn't get that gripped by other series lately.
Great season finale. I wish the whole season was like this..
However...
Spoiler:
- it was really stupid to come back to see his kid.. I mean..really? This was so cliche...
- why the fuck did he practically commit suicide rushing towards them? He had a 50/50 chance to take them all out. He was doing pretty good up to the point when he suddenly lost it lol.
.
I think it was overall a good finale, a bit of a downer tho.
Spoiler:
I wanted to see both Ray and Frank make it, although I suspected it wasn't happening.
- Why go back to see the kid? Ok, scratch that, why drive off with the fucking tracker? I'm sure there were other options. Ok scratch that too, why jump out into the open after taking out two guys? Man, what a set of bad choices.
- Oh Frank...I don't think he had a chance even if he did give up the suit of diamonds but yeah, to die like a dog in the desert...very sad.
One of the best intros i have ever seen, very artistic, along with the intro from daredevil
Season 2 was mostly boring, confusing, didn't keep me hooked until the last 2 episodes.
Ending was good, brutal conclusion.
Don't understand why season 2 had different director for each episode i think it messed up the show
Hoping for season 3 to take place in chiraq/detroit miamvice/winter new york and for a better season than 2 was.

Binge watching the whole season? That must have been heavy going.
if the first season was a masterpiece, season 2 was max 3/10; what a waste of time
yeah, ive tried watching ep 7, i can only manage 15 minutes at a time, then i have to take a break and do something else because its so incredible dull / bad.. i give up.. Watching Sopranos (third time) its as amazing as ever, the older i get the more i seem to appreciate it
Well after Season 2 I think we have an answer. Fukunaga wins
has he done anything else special so far? maybe it would have been exactly the same with him this season. maybe he was just good at finding a way out of this at the best time.
never heard of him before true detective. so even if he hates pizzolatto he should be thankful for being involved in season 1. cause all the fame he is getting now comes from true detective

Methinks it's really a case of inevitable crashing of egos, the two roosters in the same coop case. I don't like to take anyone's side really, because that season 1 happened to be close to perfection and everyone played his part, including the actors themselves, it was an epic synergy that we witness very rarely.
So far for me Pizzolatto has already proven to be capable of keeping the bar pretty high, despite some mistakes. I'm really curious to watch Fukunaga's upcoming written and directed Beasts of No Nation, it looks very promising. One thing is for sure, as a viewer I'd take one angry Fukunaga over a laid back Justin Lin any day of the week.

According to the article Fukunaga is laid back and Pizzolatto is the angry one.

Yeah I've also read that he's very jealous of his work, and doesn't accept constructive criticism which is possibly the most disruptive attitude in his field :<
Hope he realizes that before it's too late, it's really easy to go from the 'superstar' status to oblivion these days and according to the ratings, it's already not looking too good for the TD brand. Time will tell I guess, or well, season 3 will. Pizza pls!
the meaning of word masterpiece is something like 11/10 for me. sopranos is a masterpiece for example. S01 of true detective is a very good tv show, but i can't give it a masterpiece label when some of S01 finale events were predictable miles away.
The Spectacularly Cool Detail You Probably Missed In The ‘True Detective’ Finale
Quote:
The Internet hasn’t been very kind to Nic Pizzolatto after the season two finale of True Detective. It’s been met with less than kind reviews from critics and Twitter. But what many may have missed — including myself — is one spectacularly cool detail that may not have salvaged the season, but that I will grant is pretty neat.
You remember the conversation that Ray Velcoro had with his dad while he was unconscious after being shot with riot shells by the Bird mask killer? That conversation actually predicted Ray’s demise. Reddit user detectiverogers brilliantly put it together.
