I ran across an interesting article on empathy while browsing the BBC today.
It has a link to this quiz (fair warning, do not hit next after viewing your score, or it does that facebook app thing of trying to send it to everyone), a test devised by neuropsychologist Simon Baron-Cohen, that tries to gauge how well one can read people's emotions by simply gazing into their eyes.
I took it and scored well, which greatly surprised me as I've never really felt comfortable around people, and have more or less always considered myself emotionally withdrawn from most everyone. And yet, apparently, even being the anti-social introvert that I undoubtedly am, somewhere in that head of mine lies some innate ability to see through the eyes of others.
Is it possible to posses a great deal of empathy and yet feel emotionally withdrawn from others, as well as lack the ability to feel any real sympathy? Could it be that because I feel I've missed out on so much in life that I've somehow subconsciously developed an affinity to living through the eyes of others (film/TV/books etc.)?
Thoughts/comments/musings welcome - I thought this would be an interesting topic for tonight as General has been kind of sparse lately.

Will try the test later on pc. Makes sense to withdraw yourself from or block out others, when youre an empathic guy, as it can get fast too much. I speak from experience...
People like us are those, who seek the reasons behind peoples actions and therefore understand them more. Like the opposite of haters, the so called do-gooder. Yet we feel very egoistic because we are overwhelmed with our ability and reflect our withdrawal from society in that negative way.

That wasn't quite as hard as I expected. Got 25, and if it really means anything ( it apparently has some significance, as it was mentioned in the test) I have aspergers syndrome.
As for your question: That may very well be. I am full of regrets myself regarding some decisions ( That I ultimately came to think was a stupid one ). Sometimes I can barely contain myself while watching a movie if something in particular touches me, such as the comradery that the submarine crew in 'Das Boot' shows. Or even the part in the second lord of the rings movie where Gandalf, Eomer and his eóred charge the uruk-hai on horseback.
People say that I as someone with asperger is devoid of empathy, and that really infuriates me. It's almost they say I like I live in a completely different world, when I merely interpret it in another way...

Aye, I'm the same way. For some reason I'm simply able to feel so much more on such a deeper, almost intrinsic if you will, level from characters and scenes in films/TV/games than I've simply ever come close to feeling in person. I don't know whether it's the social anxiety kicking in, or perhaps the fact that the aforementioned characters are specifically developed to showcase extremes, but that has more or less always been the case.
Its always bothered me though, though perhaps it shouldn't. It's a very stifling feeling, yet at the same time can be somewhat liberating, as strangely ironic as that statement may be.

I get what you're saying, but I don't think I'd go so far as to label myself a do-gooder. If anything, its made me an idealist (or have I always been one regardless?). Unfortunately, an idealist without the power and motivation to bring about change is more or less useless. Over time it has led to great resentment and spite being bottled up - doubt that's healthy, heh.

I got 29/36 and 3 of those were very very close choices because they might mean both.
Not sure I agree with all of them - some are very much Hollywood caricatures of what emotions look like.

Is the neurologist related to Sacha Baron-Cohen?
Edit:
Nevermind, they look nothing alike.

Some of these though were very in between. Guess I'm average as fuck with empathy.

Better than I expected at least.
Made a bit easy when you can cross reference words and think how they should look like.
Without the words and having to fill it in myself it be a disaster

le special snowflake toni:
Probably would have scored even higher if the test was not fuxxored, mine seemed to believe that pretty much any woman in there was desiring him as opposed to me that saw that they really weren't
And yeah, some of those photos and people were a bit too hollywood

32/36 - and the 4 I missed were buillshit as well - too close to call.
Thing is, you judge sentiments not only from the eyes, but from facial expression as well. If the whole face was there, I doubt most people would get less than 95% accuracy.
