Quote:

Sci-fi comedy classic Red Dwarf is making a comeback.

Two new series have been commissioned, reuniting Craig Charles (Lister), Chris Barrie (Rimmer), Danny John-Jules (Cat) and Robert Llewellyn (Kryten) as the four hapless space explorers.

The shows will air on TV channel Dave in 2016 and 2017 after beginning production in the autumn.

Red Dwarf's co-creator Doug Naylor, who is writing and directing Red Dwarf XI and XII, said that he had been trying to bring back the series since 2012.

"Frustratingly it's taken until now to get our ducks in a row and all the boys available at the same time. Now they are, we're all absolutely delighted," he said.

The now legendary Red Dwarf attracted a cult fanbase and a dedicated following after first airing in 1988 on BBC2.

The first episode featured the technician character Dave Lister on the mining ship Red Dwarf, who wakes up to discover that he has been in stasis for three million years and that his fellow crew have been killed by a radiation leak.

The show went on to attract more then eight million viewers, was broadcast in 25 countries and scooped International Emmy and British Comedy Awards.

After a 10-year absence, Dave initially brought back the show in 2009 with Red Dwarf: Back to Earth, which became t he biggest ever non-terrestrial commission attracting over 2.6 million viewers - followed by a six-part series, Red Dwarf X in 2012.

Commissioning editor Simon Lupton said: "Red Dwarf has superb talent attached: writing, directing and acting plus an expert team who absolutely know what they are doing when it comes to delivering a stand-out piece of television.

"It has a universal appeal that manages to touch long-standing fans and recruit new ones.

"It is fantastic to be collaborating with them again on the next phase of the Red Dwarf adventure."

Back to earth was shite, but the last season was enjoyable enough.

Looking forward to it

... it already died once... was brought back... and then died again... the show dies for a reason. it was great once, but like all good things, it eventually dries up.

just leave it in peace...

does make me want to rewatch the original series again though...

It didn't die. Everyone was still willing to do another series - and the last season was quite good still so I got no idea where you got the idea that it dried up.

I guess chiv thought it "died" in 2012 after RDX, but yeah... we were waiting. They'd already announced a new season but then it went quiet for years, I guess now we know why; scheduling conflicts. I'm just glad it's back!

Agreed. It wasn't as good as the episodes I saw.

Although I did see S11E02 being filmed and I haven't watched that yet - hopefully it lives up to my expectations.

It was funny at times but they changed from sharp "play off each-other" comedy with lots of puns and slapstick jokes to a more ... "haha isn't this funny" kind of comedy which kills itself.

For example, the whole bar scene just wasn't Red Dwarf - it took 5 seconds to get what they were going for (a science parody of a speak-easy) and yet they dragged the joke on and on until it made me go "yeah yeah we GET IT". It would have been far more effective if the viewer had to make the click him/herself instead of making it very very VERY blatant. I did find the "bob the bum" building the thing because they believed in him funny though.

A lot of the banter between them is spot on, however, and it's what I love best but I wanted some more slapstick (there's virtually none in this episode) as well as some clever multi-layered puns (only a few there). Still, better than no Red Dwarf but "in your face" comedy will never ever work for Red Dwarf - RD never indulged itself in such a way (that I recall anyway) so please don't do it now.

It was about a 45 - 50 min drive (average by UK standards Smile)

Nope. BBC not involved with this series at all - commissioned by UK TV a digital network of channels. But I don't work for them either, I just applied for tickets (I follow the show quite closely).

E02 is out now by the way, and it's better than E01, although I still personally believe the best is yet to come Smile

Fuck, after the Back to Earth special I'm still scared to touch the later seasons to not tarnish the good memories of Red Dwarf.

Is it safe? Is it good?

First ep of S12 wasn't that good, hope there will be a better one next week.

I watched the entire show last year, I think the new episodes are fine. There are a few ones that aren't that good though.
But I prefer them to the late 90's ones where they added the useless female and then the entire old crew and better than the first two seasons where the show was still finding itself.
Since I watched for the first time there are no nostalgia glasses so not sure how the new episodes are going to resonate with the old fanbase.
