...that is the question.

Got an opportunity to move. Me & fiance want to move to somewhere more rural, as we live in a 3 bed house next to lots of horrid children and people. Only thing is, I get 80mb fibre here, and I won't get anything in the house I'm looking at.

I can however get satellite broadband, it costs a lot more, but that is justified by not paying for fibre and reducing the cost of my Sky TV package.

What's more important... bearing in mind I never really get to leave the house, I could live in idyllic surroundings with a 400ms latency, or I could stay here and bask in wonderful speeds, but suffer the children.

What would you do?

Countryside, I guess. Quick internet isn't that important, just leave it downloading and manage your expectations. Most of the stuff I download I don't watch for a few days anyways.

I was in a similar situation (down south) a few years ago. We opted to meet in the middle, forgoing some of the countryside for a more rural suburb. Cost me though, and I still plan to get a detached house in the countryside one day (when I can afford one closer to civilisation)

you can get 20-22Mbps connection with sat in scotland so thats not bad considering, as long as the signal is solid all the time its a fine speed for ditching noise of people Very Happy

No option to invest in fibre or vdsl later in time at that house (as in digging the line)?
Look up what your options are (mail the companies), might be expensive.. but it's something one can save up for if its a permanent resident.

Sattelite is a bit wonky, so might be better for you to choose a slower but more stable connection instead. I had a lot of downtimes over here and in all honesty I'd pick my 50mbps stable (99% of the time up) connection from Belgium over this 100mbps line if I had the chance.

This, so much this.
And besides, you'll stop being an MP and co-op faggiola, also good for the health too Cool Face

But yeah, I'm definitely with Toxikbrain on this. Right now I'm paying 50-60€ more than the average here for housing, but it's a really calm place and I wouldn't trade that for anything.

Well, that's pretty much what I was thinking, so hopefully the move will go ahead. I'll probably get the satnet for like, large downloads and suchlike, and basic telephone broadband for online play etc.

And I'll be getting a telescope for some serious stargazing Very Happy

Oh and rural internet speeds are less than 3mb Neutral

I'm also one of the supporters of that option, (giant +1 @ Toxibrain's and Toni's posts), because.. well that's exactly what I've done too. Very Happy

Nothing beats the serenity of living in the countryside, it's almost cathartic.
Bear in mind though that the slow internet can be really problematic at times (it's not only about the slow speeds, disconnections are also common), you'll need a lot of patience Smile Laughing
But if you don't mind it too much, then you'll find that the positive aspects outweigh the negative ones by a large margin. I don't know if I'd manage to live in the chaos again (probably not) Razz

i have the same "problem" with my country house.
atm connection is on free 3g, and i can get a shit 1mb adsl for 2x more $ vs my current 100mb fiber.
hell, even my 3g works kinda the same like adsl and is free (same speed) but is limited to 5 GB, after that speed drops to 200kb.
anyway, as soon as is finished ( interiors, next year), will move there without any regrets.
curently i'm going on weekends, my parents are near, like 10 minutes walks from there. i have the second 3g stick there, and is working ok for browsing and some mmo's+diablo. but i need to be carefull not to use more than 5GB monthly, after that all goes to toilet Smile

next week will put a bee hive there Smile).

first thing if you want to move: check the internet there,if theres no fiber/dsl available dont move there. you wont be satisfied with any sky dsl or 3g shit. or pay much money to get your private fiber connection Wink

Update...

Went to see the house today. It's a small cottage in the middle of literally nowhere Laughing, but there are other houses dotted around the area, so it's not 100% isolated.

IT's sound, ridiculous amounts of garden, has a drive, huge garage, oil tank heating and a conservatory-ish addon. Needs a lot of redecorating but it's nice.

And the biggest surprise? I checked on Samknows, and the Scottish rural fibre rollout map - and the area is already FTTC ready - just awaiting the local cabinet to be upgraded Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Just gotta find £1000 deposit now.... Neutral

Of course - which is why I would use standard ADSL for basic online gaming as d/l speed isn't important.

Anyway as I said, FTTC will be at the address very soon so it won't matter.

At times like these I wish I had a lot of money, I'd give it to you without thinking much about it. Maybe that's partly the reason I don't have much to begin with xD

Oh I'll keep looking, but it's more the money that's suddenly a problem - it's currently just a bit out of reach, and it wasn't a few days ago. Gah.

I can't even sell anything as I don't really have anything to sell lol!
