Try Media Portal. It's a fork of XBMC but they made it exclusively for Windows systems and so it uses DirectX9 and also supports GPU movie decoding natively (afaik). Oh and it supports most TV tuner cards, don't know if XBMC can do that.
I am going to use it in the Media Center PC I am currently building.

Cheers for Media Portal, will take a look at it. Like Spykez said, vanila XBMC is too laggy to be used exclusively. Eliz, how can you like this after using KMP for a while? Such a fast and fantastic software.

eh, media portal is junk too. Tried it for like a week and I just couldn't get myself to like it.
I just use LMRemoteKey software, then hit a button to open up MPC or any other software, hit play and that's that.
XBMC ownz took me a while to get it working but once it's working it can pretty much kick the ass of any other media software, some guy made a mod to use with an external player so I can just use it with MPC with reclock, FFDSHOW filters and a bunch of shaders and video quality is really amazing, the scrapper picks ALL covers and fanart automaticaly, plus you can't beat the design i mean...
Just installed this (actually the new version, now called Kodi), and it's pretty great. Was using MPC, then switched to Pot player and now will probably stick with this.
The main advantage to me is that it makes my private movie/tv show collection look like I'm using a proper paid streaming service. It will neatly parse all your media folders and generate its internal library, with cover art, plot outlines, imdb scores, trailers, etc. It works without a hitch, parsing scene file names and you do not even need to extract the .rar files (it just does it on the fly when watching).
It's just nicer to look at, and also useful when you have a bunch of media you are not familiar with, as it helps to quickly pick out what to watch without having to browse imdb separately or something similar.
There are other useful features, like remembering where you stopped watching so you can resume later (Pot player had this, MPC didn't at the time I stopped using it), which is something I can't do without anymore. Also it remembers what you have fully watched, which is useful with TV show seasons, as I usually forget exactly which episode I left off.
The main disadvantage is that the interface is made for TVs rather than monitors, but it's a small price to pay if it means my media library isn't just a bunch of folders anymore.
There's like a million other features in the form of add-ons but I haven't explored those yet.
been using XBMC now KODI since Xbox days..i have installed on my nettop box and also rasp pi2 (OSMC)
Anyone whosl interested heres some good addons
1. 1Channel - movies and tv streams
2. P2P streams - takes some setting up but live sports via torrent/ace stream
3. Sportsmafia (need to pay for this addon $10 per month but provides all premier league football and other sports including PPV in great quality)
There are loads more addons too but these are the three i use all the time. My nettop box also acts as a NAS serving my PI2 which is downstairs in the living room powered off the TV's usb slot.
