Mantle was dead the very day it was announced to the public as an API for games. If it evolves into something else, cool.

From what I understand they are going to keep working on it as an evolving API project limited to AMD hardware. This is a good thing since they can work faster on it and whatever improvements they work out can be pushed on to Vulkan/DX12 if possible.
The initial plan was to "open" Mantle to other hardware to use as an API for non-Windows platforms, but since that gap is filled with Vulkan now (which was apparently based off actual Mantle code) there was no longer any point to that.

Basically, you have Mantle 1.0 starting the whole thing with the work done on that being put to use in DX12 and Vulkan, and now it's time for the next iteration. Whatever useful technologies they come up with can be at some point adapted by the "standard" APIs and so the cycle continues.

PS4 uses DX15 with GTX999 and 8.5GB(9GB) memory.

It can do Vulkan just fie.

I reckon Mantle will become AMD's equivalent of Gameworx. All the proprietary stuff gets stuffed under the Mantle roof.

Edit: people have been comparing bits 'n bobs from Mantle and Vulkan. Seems that Vulkan at the moment is Mantle. The statement from Khronos did say that Mantle was used to bootstrap the development process, but it seems that Mantle quite literally is Vulkan's basis. We'll see, because if that's the case then DICE probably already have "Vulkan" working Razz

fail?

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Although it's benchmark for Android, it should indicate what Vulkan is going to be capable of... Looks really promising.

Love to see all this shit on mobile devices, meanwhile PC gamers get shit like Arkam Knight and other turd ports. Anyway impressive.

It's just a benchmark. You should compare it to PC benchmarks then, not games. And there have been eg DX12 benchmarks made.

A nice benchmark at phoronix today regards AMD vs. NVIDIA Vulkan & OpenGL Linux Performance. AMD starting to seriously catchup in the driver department the last 6-12months.

This particular graph showing serious gains with amd cards and vulkan:

That's not bad.

But you should take a closer look to that benchmark.
In reality AMD cards are just arriving on the same level as their Nvidia counterparts now.

@Bob Barnsen Absolutely my point, AMD have not been in the ballpark of usable on linux since forever if you want best performance from your hardware. This is showing they are closing the gap and could be a viable option now for linux users.

That and showing close to a 50% performance gain using Vulkan over OpenGL Very Happy
