Well, my old laptop is finally starting to die, and I found a craigslist ad that had a xeon desktop for sale. I was wondering what you guys thought about it. Specs are:

Intel Xeon E3-1230v2 CPU 4 Cores / 8 Threads 3.3GHz / 3.7GHz Turbo

32GB Kingston HyperX Black (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600 RAM

2x 240GB Intel 330 Series SSD (Total of 480 GB)

BIOSTAR TZ77B LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Intel EXPI9301CTBLK 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI-Express Network Adapter

EVGA 01G-P3-2611-KR GeForce GT 610 1GB 64-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 Video Card

Cooler Master GX - 450W Power Supply with 80 PLUS Bronze Certification

Corsair Carbide Series 200R Black Steel / Plastic compact ATX Mid Tower Case

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus - CPU Cooler with 4 Direct Contact Heatpipes

Now i know i'd need a new power supply and vid card, but is the cpu, etc worth it for $500? Should i just save my money and look for an i7 new? Thanks for the help!

Xeons are server CPUs, right? You're building a server?

na wont buy that, the cpu is old. the v2 is still ivy bridge and its socket 1155. you cant use that board again when you change the cpu to a new one. and its a z77 board, total waste for a xeon cpu which cant be overclocked. 32gb of ram is too much when you dont edit raw photos, videos etc. 8 is enough nowadays for games etc. ssds arent that good, and why two "small" ones? he used a raid? lol, please dont do that. you will need a new gfx card yes, psu should even work with a 770/970 without problems.

the problem you see, its old hardware, but its still fast. if you can live with that 500$ are cheap, very cheap. if you look for a new i7 it will be much more expensive (ddr4 is expensive etc. and i7 only worth it if you want to overclock, if not the xeon is much cheeper). new xeon cpu is about 220 euros atm, board 70, 8gb ram 60, case + psu ~ 100, 500ssd >200euros. you see where this is going?

btw: i got a 1230v3 since over one year, still no problems with it (turbo of 3,7ghz on all cores)

Thanks for the advice guys. I should have said what i primarily will use it for. Besides gaming it will also run my plex server for my house. (We don't have cable, but use plex + roku's for our house). Right now our current server can decode one HD stream fine, but when you either use a cpu intensive app on it or try to decode two streams, it lags..So looking to upgrade for something that can handle a few hd streams and still do light application work.
