Any reason for the ROG motherboard? Looks like waste of money to me.

It pretty much is. I make music but not enough to purchase a audiophile card and have two separate builds. It seems the on-board sound on here is a tad better than most. I've had bad experiences with cheap boards from gigabyte and asus but good luck with mid-to-high end.

Yes, but there are higher end Asus boards that are still less money throw than the ROG stuff which is mostly useless. A 100$ less for the board and a Sound Blaster Zx (129$) sounds like a much better option for creation. On board is never good.

Eh, I see the SB Z and Zx have the same specs, other than the external thing. I'd go with SB Z.

I got burned by creative before with the Audigy. I bought the original for that blend of home theater / gaming with production as a main concern as well. It turns out the ASIO driver wasn't done even though they advertised 0ms latency. At any rate, the parts are purchased and I agree that the board is over-priced due to rog branding.
