I don't like his thing. He's just the face of it, any political comedian can do what he does. Sometimes even better. It's sometimes saddening watching a brit grovel for american audiences. Sometimes he's in on it, and sometimes he's unaware that he's acting like an idiot.
Still watch it. But it's not my go to.

Haven't watch him regularly since they blocked the access to full shows online -.-"
But I'll miss him. He had great sense of humor.

People here speak as if he is dead. He just moved to a higher paid job.

It won't be the same. We haven't seen the real him. Children with candy or whatever that was wasn't that funny. The whole shtick of his was awesome. I'm a little scared seeing his real shtick.

Yeah, but it won't be his persona anymore.

He hasn't been that character full-time for a very long time. If you've liked him the way he was in the last ~3-4 years, you won't notice that much of a change.

Meh I'm tired of Colbert now. His "thing" has grown old and after the Sarkeesian thing, my respect for the guy has plummeted.
I always disliked Letterman too - never watched his stuff and the clips I saw, always made me cringe. I grew up watching Jay Leno and Conan O Brien on NBC and to me, those are still miles above Letterman and Colbert both.

Letterman of ~10-15 years ago eats Leno for breakfast. Leno has never been funny to me, just an idiot on the Television, always trying to be nice. I agree that last few years' Letterman has been nothing but a scarecrow of his old self.

I hate Letterman, just a terrible host. Not funny, not engaging and the show has terrible segments. I'm sure it used to be good at some point. I'd watch him only if there were some really interesting guests on, and even then only the guest segments. Colbert will turn this show into something watchable.
I liked Leno, out of all the hosts the best comedian. Not in the rehearsed monologue but I loved quickly he can react and improvise a joke during interviews. In the years I've watched him I didn't feel him to be fake, not nearly as much as most others. In general very good interviewer and comedian and overall my favorite.
To compare the others:
Fallon - Very fake, especially his laugh and constant compliments. Show overall feels too rehearsed but he is getting better and starting to improvise a bit more. He is a good performer overall, as he makes some really decent segments for the show (TV series parodies and musician parodies).
Kimmel - Pretty much on the level of Fallon, only less fake but not much else. His show has good segments that make up for it though.
Conan - Absolutely terrible interviewer, even asking questions seems difficult to him and forget about a funny comeback. Only thing he does is improvising being a goof, and that's his go-to for everything, from monologue to interviews. He can be funny but his constant goofing is annoying, I don't find it impressive as others seem to and terrible interviewing skills really put me off. Still better than Letterman. Also I hate the show segments other than Clueless Gamer.
Ferguson - Interviews are funny and interesting but the rest of the show is terrible. He is pretty direct and great at improvising (maybe too much, as it feels like the whole show is improvised, which is not a good thing). It's just too low production compared to others - proper segments are non-existant.

That's more or less how I feel about them all.
Letterman always had a stick up his ass and his arrogance shines through in his interviews.
Jay Leno at least was warm and inviting, could get his guests to open up a little, and he was quick on his feet when it comes to responses.
For the others, I pretty much agree with you although I have a soft spot for Conan O Brien - you're right that he sucks at interviews but his bumbling awkward side is what I like about it. Much better than Letterman acting like a huge dick and grinning like a moron right after.
I'll never forget the interview he did with Christoph Waltz about him playing a Nazi (Landa) in Inglourious Basterds. Letterman was all "oo you played an evil character!" and Waltz was all "no, he wasn't evil" and Letterman actually started to argue with the actor who PLAYED the part *facepalms*. And no, the Nazi he played was NOT evil - he was an opportunist, not a real nazi. It just struck me how condescending Letterman was being and Waltz was visibly irked by Letterman's behaviour.

Yeah I'm aware I'm alone in my opinion about Conan. I still watch him but I just cringe a lot.

I used to like watching Leno and O'Brian every evening, but that was in the first years it came on the Belgian TV network on NBC which was early 90's no? Late night with...
Watched it for a couple of years, then they removed the channel. I think I tried watching both a few years ago again and I really disliked what I was seeing for the most part. Now I just watch short clips of segments I like from O'brian, Colbert, lettermen and to a lesser extent: Fallon, Kimmel.
Wouldn't watch it live anymore, rather skip through the things I don't like, yeey internetz!
I do like watching John Oliver's show, he made it so I was looking forward to see a show every week.

I really liked how Ferguson didn't give a shit about the show.
It was such a nice contrast to how fucking seriously everyone else takes their show - even, or especially Jon Stewart and Colbert who present a care free facade to the audience.

I was the same (Belgian here too ) - we stayed up late to watch these two shows back when they showed it at 11 and midnight. Since back in the early 90's there was no Internet, it was very fresh to get access to what was basically "live" US TV (from the day before essentially ).
Besides that, John Oliver I've grown to dislike - as was said above, he tries too hard and has neither the British wit or the American guile and doesn't "work" for me.
