... I wasn't part of the Hump back then, so I just keep asking myself... what happened on that glorious day, at that precise moment in time?

Some big game release most likely, usually a GTA release causes a crash and burn of the forums. But tbh... could be any high profile game.

Imagine the horror if they had released GTAV in one day for all platforms... the hump would be down for weeks.

There were less big derp communities like neogaf/gamespot/ign and more oldschool gamers. Many of the gamers of those days have become too old now and the influx of new gamers are more likely to join one of those big casual console fanboy sites.
just a theory with no basis what so ever

also pirate releases came often cracked on the net before the official release date. that and it wasnt as "easy" to pirate as it is today with many more options. back then newsgroups that you had to pay for ran the day and many came to nforce to find out if there were any alternatives.

Never payed for Usenet due to the great retention that came with the free ones from the ISP (Telenet,Belgacom,Dommel). One of the few things I miss from Belgian internet (and it being stable/quick fixes).

GTA
8 out of 10 dentists prefer zipfero to competing brands(fraich3 and Mutantius)!

I dare say piracy isn't as attractive anymore as it was in 2005 either. Steam has done a lot to turn pirates into costumers.
Subsequently boards such as this aren't that interesting for non regulars anymore.

Not to mention most releases anymore aren't battling Securom or any of that crap anymore, everything is on steam anymore, so we just way for a steam crack, which apparently is super easy lol.

We're just too cool, you can't just join in like it's one of those cheap trash sites like: reddit,4chan, neogaf... Those are for the mentally weak, the cattle, the lowly commoners. No... here one has to have a certain level to begin his training into the much sought after title of master race.
Style, class and sophistication is what makes you a true humper and that sets you apart from the world that rules in mediocrity.
