You have to toggle the highest graphics + 'unlimited video card memory' in settings, I think. I mean, it still looks shit on my computer but maybe you're lucky as I've read some claim it helps. The main issue it seems to have is that the texture down/up scaling in quality doesn't work. It is supposed to make things look crap from a distance and good up close, but still it can't get it right; colors look washed out and there's no crispness to the textures at least for me.

Yeah unlimited memory is on, still looks like shit. Shogun 2 looks way better than this.

Worth playing yet?

I purchased this, like an idiot I might add, very early on (delusions of grandeur from the memories I had of the original Rome Very Happy ) .

At each stage when I've come back to it I've been disappointed with something - at first it was performance/crashing, then it was balance/speed. Is it in a respectable state finally with this latest patch?

The only new graphical changes are a different UI and faction colors? I could already get both of those with mods. I was hoping they'd get rid of the ugly color tints in battles. But I guess there's mods for that as well.

We thought it was inapropriate to release a 9 GB dox so we decided to make
it standalone. Since this game is now complete, you can delete all old packs

The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

Halloween update just released (around 40 MB) Laughing

Quote:

The latest free update for ROME II adds the festival of Lemuria to the game and a new seasonal challenge, Nightmare Mode!

Lemuria was an ancient feast during which restless spirits were exorcised from the home with the alternate offering of beans and then clashing of cooking pots. Perhaps an early Roman version of Trick or Treat?

Nightmare Mode can be toggled on from the game options menu, causing your troops to suffer horrifying visions in battle. Harpies descend from the skies as a terrifying atmosphere envelopes your forces. Assailed by such apparitions it is no surprise that your soldiers will find the enemy extremely frightening!

Any generals skilled enough to complete a Campaign battle in Nightmare Mode will earn a new Steam achievement and the adoration of their peers. May the gods help you if you try to complete a whole campaign…

More details on this update can be found in this month’s Rally point:

I also bought the game but I have waited to play it, I got it cheap at the time, but there is no way that I will pay for the the DLC, blood and gore etc.
I would assume that what will be fixed has been fixed at this point, so is there a way to download the DLC and get it to work with the legit version? It would mean less hassle with future patches and mods etc. compared to the cracked version.

Sega's PC strategy game Total War: Rome II is getting a new expansion, and it's coming soon. The Wrath of Sparta expansion, a brand-new campaign add-on, will arrive on December 16.

Set in 432 BC during the outset of the Peloponnesian War, Wrath of Sparta represents the earliest time period that the Total War series has ever seen. Here's how Sega sets up Wrath of Sparta:

"As the legendary warriors of Sparta are called into open conflict against an arrogant Athens by scheming Korinthos and Boiotia, Wrath of Sparta challenges you to dominate the Hellenic world. However, while the City States vie for control of their homelands, across the Aegean Sea the vengeful Persian Empire watches its old foe closely..."

The Wrath of Sparta map will features a "highly detailed" ancient Greece, as well as Greek Island and the Ionian Coast. It will also include new tech-trees, battlefield and naval units, "great wonders," and iconic Greek heroes. Overall, Sega says the expansion will deliver "hundreds of hours" of gameplay.

Total War: Rome II launched in September 2013, but developer The Creative Assembly and publisher Sega continue to support the PC/Mac game. That’s because the titles are perennial sellers, with new fans and history buffs playing them long after they’ve launched. In fact, the Total War games have around 850,000 monthly active players even though there hasn’t been a new title in the series this year. On average, gamers play Total War games for 104 hours per game.

That kind of fan base is fanatical. That means that anytime the developers come up with something new, the players will come.

Update 16.1
( And update 16 itself. - http://wiki.totalwar.com/w/Total_War_ROME_II:_Patch_16 )

Quote:

Wrath Of Sparta Content

A scenario set during the Peloponnesian War starting in 432 BC with 12 turns per year.
4 playable factions:
Athenai
Sparta
Boiotian League
Korinthos
Brand new campaign map, set in Total War’s earliest time period yet.
78 regions covering Greece and the Ionian Coast.
Massive scale, most zoomed in campaign map we’ve ever done
12 wonders, from the Palace of Knossos to the Silver Mines of Lavrio, located around the map.

Panhellenic games

Choose how to compete in the four games (Olympic, Pythian, Isthmian, Nemean), each playing an important part in the classical Greek world

Religious Festivals

Regular festival events highlight the key part they played in people’s lives.

New 'religions'

Representing the different Greek tribes: Ionian, Dorian, Akaian, Aiolian.
More for the other Greeks, Makedonians, Barbarians and Persians.
Main 4 tribes won't suffer any unrest from the presence of other Greek tribes, but big diplomatic penalties with non-true Greeks.
No cultural conversion.

Faction and Faction Group Traits

Greek faction group state gives lots of bonuses related to slaves.
Campaign also starts with high percentages of slaves in most regions.
Sparta gets even more bonuses to slaves to represent their Helot population.
Athens has bonuses to its navy and culture but unrest problems due to its attempts to build an empire.

New general skills and army/navy traditions

Adjusted for the unit roster available in the campaign.
Also designed to be more differentiated from one another.

All new tech tree:

Featuring six branches: Army, Navy, Support, Philosophy, Aesthetics, and Mathematics.
Each branch has its own flavouring and differs from the Grand Campaign ones.

Adjusted building tree and unit recruitment

Single port, religious and military buff chains that branch at level 4.
Single line military recruitment chain.
Decent core unit set available from all settlements.
City centre building line adjusted to have 3 options: entertainment line, muse line for research and a temple line.
New tier V port for Athenai, tier V city centre building for Korinthos. Boiotian League gets a tier V temple. Sparta has the Monument of Leonidas.

Persian Escalation

Persians happy to sit on the sidelines as long as no one faction becomes too powerful.
As you increase your Imperium, you'll get greater and greater diplomatic penalties with the Persians.
Eventually they'll attack you with lots of armies, or if you attack their cities.

Brand new unit rosters

Representing the warfare of the time period.
Heavy emphasis on Hoplites with supporting elements.
Cavalry throws javelins on the charge, rides in with spears and then fights in close melee with swords.
Mercenaries now focused on a few specialist types and more widely available across the campaign map.
Two main ship types: Trieres and Dieres with warfare focused on ramming and boarding.
Land units on transport ships will no longer be able to ram in battle; navies will be needed to escort these extremely vulnerable ships at sea.

No artillery!

Prior to the invention of ranged siege weaponry, siege battles all about taking the walls in this time period.

See the Steam Store Page for more information on Wrath of Sparta: http://store.steampowered.com/app/327280/
Changes to ROME II

Optimisation campaign memory usage by loading less campaign character / general models into campaigns where they are not needed.
Land units on transport ships will no longer be able to ram in battle; navies will be needed to escort these extremely vulnerable ships at sea.
Improvements to animations for charging shock cavalry.
Improved unit bracing in shield wall formation for the units in the rear of the ranks.
Fixed the white loading screen which appeared when changing graphics settings during a battle.
Fix for some battle terrain bugs in the Caesar in Gaul Campaign.
Disabled ramming for barbarian ships.
Added a fix to the "Continue Campaign" button on the launcher, which in some very rare cases didn't work for a few users with unexpected file path to appdata.
Added a new Spartan loading screen.
Improved axe-men animations, to replace "stabbing" animations in synced combat.
Fixed a flooded area in a Barbarian minor port battle map.

(Ancient Greece sold separately. - http://store.steampowered.com/app/327280/ Razz )

There shouldn't be any problem, the GEMFX works with all the dx9/11 games and is not limited to Rome. Just place it inside the same folder as the game's exe, and that's it. I'm using with other games as well, albeit it requires tweaking and I always disable the next gen glaringscreensoreal effect first. Very Happy
