Apparently you can get a free copy through "Borderlands Granting Tool" which is available in the steam's tools section. all you need is a mini image and daemon tools pro.

A "mini image" and specifically DTPro?...Mini image as in an ISO version of the retail copy? Oo...

I've done worse on my Steam account, like the NBA 2K9 thing, where you load up a mini image and get the game free on Steam, but you must be using a NA IP address. Did that years ago.
