An explosive situation
I'd love to play it, but knowing the two of us... we'd end up bitching

framerate doesn't really matter with dk1 that much, but if you drop below 75fps on dk2 it physically uncomfortable
you can run some basic games on a laptop, if you can reach that performance level

After owning both I think that dk1 was much better device all in all. Easier to use, works just as Asa second display. Easier to drive and so on.
besides. I really disliked the dot matrix on dk2. Much more freer the better fill of square pixels on dk1. Tho, blacks were fantastic on dk2.
I admit that I feel bad for selling dk1 and ok with selling dk2.

Man people suck in this game so much. It's all about communicating as much information as fast as you can and narrowing the situation down to the known cases.

Yea, DK1 SDK was WAY superior
DK2 added a shitload of complexity to the thing
developing is harder
using is more work
fiddling with drivers and shit
still, it's necessary
technically it's superior
screen is higher res
low persistence is awesome when it works
screendoor is not as prominent (but I still installed a diffuser)
but it's a huge step down from ease of use and the opposite direction from a consumer usable product
SDK updates have been reeeeally slow too
i honesty would have expected async timewarp by now

Samsung GearVR is now out for sale.
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/wearable-tech/SM-R320NPWSXAR
https://www.oculus.com/blog/gear-vr-innovator-edition-now-available/
Naturally Note 4 required.
I got to play with one a while ago and it was pretty much what I expected.
It's essentially a refined mobile version of what the DK1 tech was.
Rock solid 3 degree-of-freedom tracking (=rotation only).
Android mobile hardware naturally renders only simplistic scenes.
Black smear is still there just like in DK2 (could possibly be fixed with an update).
Control is terrible with the side of the head touchpad.. just unusable.
The separate samsung controller is too small to be comfortable and feels a bit awkward in your hand.
The screen runs at 60hz low persistence in contrast to DK2's 75hz.
Because of this, in some instances there's noticeable flicker, especially in very bright scenes, whereas I can't ever see any flicker with DK2.
The 1440p screen is pretty great - clearly superior to 1080p of the DK2, but the screendoor is still very visible.
It's also not using the screen as efficiently as DK2, but has a much better optical sweet spot, not having any out-of-focus issues DK1 and DK2 have.
It's a lot more comfortable to wear than either of the devkits.
My gigantic nose actually fits under it.
I can't see out through the nose hole now either.
The lens are also not uncomfortably protruding like in the devkits.
As a result the FOV is slightly smaller, but still immersive.
For some reason the distortion was all wrong in all the 4 devices and experiences I tried, but I feel this is probably an issue of using an outdated SDK. There's no way they would not notice that, with how important it is.
It's a small technical miracle that it works as well as it does.
It shows that Carmack spent a year hacking at this to optimize it.
The latency is lower than the windows version due to kernel and driver access.
And they've added asynchronous timewarp, which means headtracking still works even if you drop frames.
Oculus calls it framerate insurance.. normally dropping a single frame in DK2 feels really awful - the world jerks back like being hit in the head.
With async timewarp, it just looks like the world is running at a lower framerate, but you can still look around fine.
Note though that it doesn't have any positional tracking - so you WILL get nauseous after playing a while.
Luckily, use duration is limited by battery life and overheating.
Sixense Stem does support android and GearVR though, and they have demoed their jedi training demo on GearVR at events.
Personally I don't see much potential for mobile VR, but hey, it exists.

Yea, it's waaaaaaaaay overpriced.
There isn't enough hardware to justify it.
It's just a plastic case with touchpad and the Oculus tracker.
Should be under $100.

Naw, I don't see that happening with Oculus/Facebook.
They know the tech and industry isn't ready yet.
No gaming company is going to put money on a project for a product nobody can afford.
They believe they need to grow the infrastructure first, and it's the right approach. (stated consistently in interviews)
They're just exchanging favors with Samsung to get access to their screen tech, while Samsung sells their outdated scraps overpriced.
*checks Samsumg site*
Holy shit, you actually have to buy the shitty samsung controller separately, at $75.99. (with only $30 off if bundled)
It's funny since it actually has more hardware in it than gearvr does, but it should be bundled in by default.
The temple pad controller is really awkward.

Sensor hardware in it is Oculus made.
Samsung is a really terrible and corrupt company if you ask any South Korean.
But they do tend to make decent hardware usually.
