Set in the DC Comics' Shared Universe that debuted with Man of Steel, Suicide Squad is going to be the next film in the continuity after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
It's being directed by David Ayer whose recently released film, Fury, was well received, while the screenplay is written by Justin Marks, best known for his Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li's script. 
Ayer said about the film:

The premise:

The release date is August 5, 2016 and so far we have the following casting news:
- Jesse Eisenberg is set to reprise his role of Lex Luthor, he will first play in Batman v Superman.
- Will Smith and Tom Hardy are wanted for unknown roles. They should cast Hardy as Bane for shits and giggles
- Jared Leto is wanted to play The Joker.
- Margot Robbie is confirmed as Harley Quinn.

Dafoe doesn't even need that much makeup to make him a proper Joker

is there any word if the tv and movie franchises are in any way connected?
the suicide squad played a part in the arrow series already
i don't really want to see them connected
all the superpower nonsense strips all believability of the drama

Jared Leto is like the quiet, dreamy kid in the back of the class. But who knows, Heath Ledger never played anything like Joker before either. He's a great actor, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Indeed, he's proven to be quite the chameleonic actor, which is a great virtue. If he managed to pull off such a convincing (and difficult) character in Dallas Buyers Club, anything is possible.  |

Will Smith, Jared Leto, Tom Hardy, confirmed as expected. Also joining the cast are Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne.
Their revealed roles:
Jared Leto – The Joker
Will Smith – Deadshot
Tom Hardy – Rick Flagg
Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn
Jai Courtney – Boomerang
Cara Delevingne – Enchantress
Jesse Eisenberg is still expected to reprise his role as Lex Luthor, although they haven't locked him yet and the studio is still looking to cast the role of Amanda Waller with the candidates being Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey with the studio preferring the latter.

Nice cast. Having doubts about Will Smith, as it's been a while since he did something of quality. But I'm definitely intrigued.

im really happy with that casting of leto as joker, i think hes a great actor, and hes got the perfect look for joker... im really excited to see what hes gonna do with him.
as for will smith... nah, not feeling that AT. ALL. i like smith as an actor, but not for that role.
