I played the game for a little bit. I can confirm a couple of things people have been asking for:
- When playing the game in 4:3, everything is 4:3, including the pre-rendered cutscenes.
- I think it has all the control schemes from the original game. I saw a control scheme where RT is move forward and left/right is rotate.
The new controls are default, but I appreciate that after you press "new game," it'll show a quick options screen with the most important choices: aspect ratio, control type, subtitles, and voiced language.
Good that they didn't crop those.

I had a brief look at game files. The game is using MT Framework. And the surprising thing is that the resolutions of character textures seems to be the same as in REmake:
I guess all the new detail comes from normal mapping and new shaders.
Huh..

Container files, model files, texture files, shader files, and more are the exact same formats as MT Framework games. It's identical enough that a program I made for extracting and converting files works without any modification. This is definitely MT Framework.
Ok..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eS36UgVNGdY - I uploaded a first impressions video of REmaster. Doesn't really show much besides the start of the game and various options.
Short summary:
- The game looks good overall. With the exception of specific rooms (like the outdoor area just outside the main hall), they upscale well to 720p. The ones which don't upscale well do look like crap though.
- While I think they did a good job implementing 16:9, 4:3 feels a lot better to use.
- New controls feel identical to DMC4 controls, and they are actually unwieldy at times. Tank controls feels better and looks a lot better in my opinion.
- All the characters sound super manly in Japanese.
- Wesker's Report is in Japanese only, with no subtitles.
Alrighty.

I hate Resident Evil games, they are American remakes of the excellent Silent Hill games (seriously, why do we have also American remakes of Japanese horrors like Ring?)
The controls are bad, basically you wrestle with a gamepad while the enemy slowly shambles towards you. Quicktime events are bad. The story makes no sense (evil corporation creating evil zombie/plant/robots).
Give me a good Silent Hill any day, but alas, since Silent Hill 4, all the sequels were just crap.

I heard Downpour is decent, but no PC port in sight, even when the game is build on UE3 of all engines. But Konami is slowly changing their attitude towards PC, maybe one day.
Anyway, since you agree that SH games after 4, which came out in 2004, are crap it's only fair to compare them to RE1, 2, 3, CV, REmake, 0. RE4 came out in 2005 so it doesn't qualify.

No.
Resident Evil (1996)
Resident Evil 2 (1998)
Silent Hill (1999)
Silent Hill was clearly inspired by, almost cloned Resident Evil.

Well.. You might not like tank controls (I like them) but Silent Hill 1 had the same tank controls as well.
SH2 & 3 had the option to choose between tank controls and more direct controls and guess which were the default ones and which were the afterthought? Hint: Tank controls 4 lyfe.
And the less said about SH4's controls the better.
As for the enemy encounters the combat in SH is very boring IMO.

What's that? No such thing to be found in RE1, 2, 3, CVX, REmake, 0.

Fair enough.

I've been comparing some random backgrounds from this remaster and if we leave aside the over contrasty look they chose to give them more oomph I can't fault them as lazy as they've touched in various ways all the backgrounds I've checked so far (I checked like 6, randomly, from the hundreds).
That being said we do know some weren't touched, but my testing showed to me clearly these weren't just run through a filter. Artists went over these by hand on photoshop and made custom fixes.

The move to MT Framework from it's original .gif-like based engine means it can be 60 fps on PC!

It looks soo good !
I am glad I've finished a original remake in dolphin this year and loved it. At least now I have a good comparison how well the new version looks. Some of the background seem to be badly upscaled but they could only do as much
