Well it really depends from when you updated, backups is the way to go and never upgrade unless you're really sure if it's stable.

There was a huge warning about this on Twitter. All gets deleted then you open an old world in 1.8

The older the world, the more I recommend going through each (major world) update or just use MCEdit to get everything you have from your old into a fresh save.

You can install Java on your system and disable it in your webbrowser. This way, potentially harmful Java Applets (those are NOT Java Applications like Minecraft) will not be executed while browsing the webs.
Minecraft and many other applications are just Java Applications, which are as dangerous as running any other application.

Because the world itself has been modified by 1.8
Going back won't bring back the erased Data. Minecraft generally updates the data format and thus can lead to corrupted worlds. The only safe way seems to be to manually set the launcher to download only the next minecraft version and upgrade the world step by step :/
