Sounds like an obvious question perhaps, but with TV technology progressing all the time with many able to display the same resolution as many monitors.

What exactly is the difference? Let's say I bought a half way decent 32" TV, would I really notice much difference between it and my 24" monitor?

Please explain in layman's terms why I need to use a monitor and not a TV.

Cheers

Input lag and pixel pitch.

Pixel pitch = size of the pixels; a TV obviously has bigger pixels, so if you're sitting closer to it, you'll be able to count them.

Input lag is more important though. That's the time it takes between an image being sent to the display and it actually being displayed. On the average TV this is much higher than on a monitor. Input lag of 20ms means every image is delayed by *at least* 20ms; for gaming that basically is like playing with a ping of 20 as opposed to the 0-5 we get on a monitor. Sounds insignificant but you do notice it.

Pixel size is the most obvious. You sit close to the monitor, so you notice pixels easily. If you sit at the same distance from a TV, you'll see the huge pixels. If you sit far enough to not see the pixels, you won't be able to read the text. TVs are terrible as monitors for anything other than watching movies and playing games.

A lot of TVs can have all the processing disabled for a minimal input lag.

So TV's are OK for watching vids and playing games? Isn't that really the main thing we do on our PC's? What exactly are they not good for?

Excuse my ignorance and thank you for the replies

I use my LG as main PC Monitor. Switch it to PC mode and voila, no lag. Also it has a 47" IPS panel and because I am blind as a fish, I can't see any pixels from 1m away Laughing

The colors are mighty fine as well, so are the viewing angels. 100% satisfied with my TV as monitor as far as I can say ^_^

I do coding, tv, movies, photoshop, 3d modeling, video editing and of course gaming (fast shooters, racing games, simulations etc..) Smile

So some TV's are as good as monitors? Now I'm confused.

Some are, yeah. But you need to explicitly turn them into a "PC" mode like Pumpy says (I'd use that mode for consoles too).

For gaming you will also need to pay attention to some specifics. For HDTVs extra fast response times are not a huge priority, for example, so depending on the panel, the image might be a bit more blurry than what you would get from a cheaper TN monitor.
Input lag also varies from model to model, even with the "Gaming" mode.

In general, unless you get some crappy TV, you will likely get a better image for your tastes from that rather than a monitor, but as was said, you will need to mind response times, input lag, and pixel pitch... also price - a decent TV is likely to be more expensive. Aside from those factors you can choose one just as you would a monitor - see reviews, get the best available for the budget.

Personally, I used my 46" HDTV for some PC gaming and occasional browsing (when I am too lazy to get off the couch Very Happy), and it was pretty good, but I always felt the need to sit much closer than your typical TV distance. The resolution is also an issue, especially with larger TVs. It's not bad, but you can see the difference if you compare it to some 22-24" monitor.
I think HDTV gaming will become much more interesting when 4K gaming becomes viable Smile
