A friend of mine asked me if he could swap out his i5 2400 for an i7.

He doesn't do any encoding etc, just gaming, so I was going to suggest that his CPU is still decent enough and that he would get a bigger increase in gaming performance from a new video card instead (a 280x would probably be within his budget).

Am I right or talking out of my ass?

Would a 2400 bottleneck a 280x? What about a 290?

For gaming I don't think the CPU is holding him back, a GPU upgrade would still show better performance gains.
(Can overclock the CPU a bit should that be needed, as a i5 it should be a quad core already so that's all good.)

Definately the GPU upgrade!

The CPU may be on the low end, but it is still very much recommended for gaming on a budget.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

The only difference between a 2400 and a 2500k are the unlocked multiplier and a higher frequency, the TIM is the same (fantastic) and from an architectural pov, it's the same CPU, sans the video card. Upgrade the GPU, as there is absolutely no reason to get another i5 over the one present now. Maybe when a new, groundbreaking architecture comes along and it's actually worth it. I still regret giving away my 2500k.

He would see a bigger increase from the GPU yes. Way bigger.

There will be some cpu bottleneck in cases like MMOs/strategy games/Crysis 3 so if he wants 99% gpu usage he'll have to upgrade the cpu in the future as well, but overall considering his current components the GPU would give him way more bang for the buck.

I had i5 2400 before this i7 so i can tell you exactly how it was. My 780 had bottlenecks in the games i mentioned before and a few others as well. Not always ofc, only a few sections in those games but since i already had a beefy gpu i wanted the xperience to be as smooth as possible overall so yeah. Plus i also do video editing / photoshop etc so was a no-brainer really.
