It's not pointless, no...
Keys are easier to revoke, which is something to consider when you're dealing with unauthorised resellers, like Fast2Play.
Just a few days ago, Rebellion revoked keys for Sniper Elite 3 that were sold through the unauthorised reseller CJS-CDkeys. Because keys from unauthorised sellers usually come from retail-boxes, publishers can claim they were illegally bought or stolen, and then revoke them. Revoking can happen with Steam Gifts, but the only times that occurs is when the gift was bought with a stolen credit card, or the original buyer does a charge-back to get a refund. Revoking keys from unofficial sellers is something that's going to happen more and more, I think.
Just something to bear in mind. 
(Edit: Also, this is just something that happens with unauthorised sellers, like Fast2Play/G2Play/CJS etc. Places like Nuuvem, Amazon, GMG are totally authorised, and you should never get a key revoked if purchased from somewhere official.)

Yes, if a key is cheaper and the game is JUST for you (or even if it's for a friend/someone you trust), buy the key instead of the gift.
Just make sure you can trust the place you're buying the key from. (Edit: as pixie just covered)

Does the My games tab at the news section ever work?
Never seen it work, quite annoying since most of the news is junk anyway and I want a quick way to check it for the games I own.
