Impressive hardware. They also released it completely unlocked so people are already getting XBMC ported onto it as well as some other impressive software. It's been rooted and hacked already as well.
I'm a pretty big fan of the Roku originally running along with my Plex server but Roku have a testicle tight grasp on keeping the thing locked down and only running what they want on the system. It's slow and laggy as well so I'll surely enjoy the much faster Amazon part. Roku also has a shit interface kit for developers to work with, if you've ever run Plex on it with a large amount of movies and shows, even Netflix, you'll know how irritating it is to search for anything.
It's also pretty damn good at running emulators. Here's one running the N64
He's got a 360 Gamepad working on it O___O
SNES (think he's using the amazon gamepad)
This is pretty cool too from a review

But Fire TV also uses software to speed things up. Amazon does this in part by pre-caching material it suspects you'll want to play. The 30 seconds or so we spent pondering "The Hunger Games," included in Amazon Prime, was apparently enough time for Fire TV to get the movie ready to play instantly when we pushed the button. Startup was equally quick when we selected the movie "Metropolis" from Hulu Plus.
i dont live in us, so i canot use the streaming stuff cause are locked to us anyway.
it can work like a regular 1080p player ? with an external hd/usb stick ?
thanks.
That thing looks incredible, especially if you want an "easy to use" setup. For the specs you could likely do better with a quadcore Android HDMI stick but you don't get the ease of use and style of the Fire TV
~edit~
Oh and no, that's a knockoff 360 controller - the Amazon Fire controller doesn't have the Xbox centre button. It looks quite nice though, I'm curious about the dpad;

So the wired 360 controllers work natively then? I didn't know MS put out Linux/Android drivers I really do like the look of the Fire TV, it's a good price in a very attractive and capable package. Nice quad proc and above-average "mobile" GPU, I'm not surprised it was playing N64 titles fine I've seen some vids of NDS running great too, which is even better.
Hm... maybe I should consider selling my PS3 for this, I'm really just using it as a media server anyway. Reckon I'd need to keep this wired for 1080p streaming? I'm not sure if this will be available in Sweden though.

eBay has them for £56 ($96) with £14 ($25) shipping to Norway/Sweden. That's probably the best we're going to see until Amazon starts selling them in Europe.

I do 1080p streaming over wireless on my plex server with my roku which has half the owe of Amazon's

Hm.. looks like I'll have to keep my eyes on the Amazon Fire TV then, it could be a great entertainment machine if you could stuff all pre-N64 emulators on it.

Ouya is selling like shit and will more than likely be abandoned. The Amazon has more horsepower under the hood and is selling like Hotcakes and Ouya's response to failing is talking shit lol
Amazon never said it was a gaming system yet it's still doing it better than the Ouno
Also for those who DO have the Ouya and want to get rid of it, someone got the Ouya store working on the Fire device lol
You can see all the IO devices Fire TV can work with by looking at the files at /system/usr/keylayout/

I need to get a new telly.. Still on my old 32" Panasonic tube telly (great picture and all but no HD and only SCART inputs = can't use any modern equipment without a very expensive SCART->HDMI-converter which is kinda pointless).
But I have to repair my car before I can even begin to think about anything of the sorts.

Well, if you can find them, look for a Roku 2 or XS. It comes with RCA output cables for older TVs.

I can't even get close to 1080p over wireless (router on 2nd floor, tv on first in living room), but really nothing that a cheap powerline setup doesn't solve (powerline is fucking amazing btw).
firetv looks cool (also gary busey in in the commercials), but still not trading in my htpc for one (chromecast in the bedroom which is the only other TV)
Well I spent a good two days rooting and toying around with this thing my god, the amount you can do on this thing and the power it's got is pretty astonishing.
Root access etc took about 10 minutes. From there with using ADB over the network this thing just opens way up.
Got the SNES working great. NES and Sega I'm still looking for a good emulator that'll work well on the fireTV using gamepads.
Tried my powered USB hub that I have so I have more than just 1 spot and works flawlessly. Both my xbox360 gamepads report the player number accordingly in the middle of the gamepad and works flawlessly as well as trigger and analogs.
Used stickmount which needs root access to mount external drives and got my 16GB pen drive working so I run my roms off of that.
Rockstar ported the GTA games to the fireTV which works 100% with the xbox gamepads and running the game maxed out with almost no slowdowns. Device gets a little warm to the touch but nothing damaging or skin melting.
Got the chrome web browser up and running and works with most generic style keyboard and mice. I ordeded a Logitech Divino Mini to use for the browser. Youtube site works 100% It surprisingly really easy to read text on it.
Got the google play store installed and working with my Google account however intalling games and so forth is pretty useless since they're designed to work with touch screens. Other apps like adblockers will prove useful.
Plex is running GREAT and has such a better interface that the Roku's. Haven't tried XBMC yet since I've already put the work into my plex servers.
Awesome writeup mate, glad you're having a blast with it and I'm glad it's handling stuff nicely As for emulators? Any of Robert Broglia's .EMU series. Get them. They're glorious! I know squarepusher (of RetroArch/PS3 scene hacking fame) is pretty pissed with Robert for selling these originally-open-source emulators, but meh.. they guy has put enough work into them, and continues to update all the time, that I reckon he's earned his paltry $4/emu. However! You can yarr them just as easily as buying, so there's that too Anyhow, the .EMU series have near flawless emulation and support every controller recognised by the OS, whether it's USB or bluetooth, if the controller is recognised by FireTV then it works in .EMU.
Get MD.EMU for Genesis (oh you Americans ), Master System and SegaCD emulation (Robert doesn't have a GG emulator, so get Gearoid for that)
Get NES.emu for NES.
SNES9x+ is my recommended SNES emulator. SuperGNES has a nicer UI but SNES9x+ is far more advanced. SNES9x is free too.
GBA/GBC.emu for Game Boy Advance and Colour games.
NEO.emu is fantastic for NeoGeo titles, runs them great on my iPad2 though you may need to have RetroArch alongside as NEO doesn't support any of the "large" Neo games, like Garou/SvC/KoF/MSlug5/SamSho5.
I use these on my iPad2 all the time and they're as close to perfect as you can get and they don't require the enormous amounts of horsepower that RetroArch does either. That and, whether this interests you, the .EMU series have full cheat code support whereas RetroArch abolished cheats a few revisions back due to REASONS® So yeah, while RetroArch is nice and it has dozens of "cores" for each emulator, it's also bloated and clunky to use and has less features than the individual standalone emulators. Get it anyhow as it has FANTASTIC support for MAME. I'd definitely be interested in seeing how NDS and PS1 titles run on your FireTV

I tried SuperGnes and it didn't work very well with the firetv. The SNES9x is what I'm using right now and it's working flawlessly.
I'm going to look into those other emulators right now Know of any android ps1 emulators for me to look at?
FPse running Crash Bandicoot full speed using software hires It fluctuates between 54-60FPS. Doing hardware hi res knocked it down to about 25-30. However software still looks great. Going to grab some more roms and test em
Oh wow, that's disappointing.. I thought the Adreno 320 had more juice than that It's good you can run in Soft/HiRes but still, no doubt that's down to the epic CPU part of the combo Oh and I forgot; ePSXe is out for Android too.
Well it's only 1.6GHz so it might benefit from a higher clock speed. From the sounds of it there's a team working on getting rid of amazon's rom and making a custom one O__O
web browser fully functioning with that mini keyboard that i posted!!! this tv is surprisngly clear as fuck like an actual monitor for reading text. no blurring or anything.
