The reason is pretty simple. It's because gaming is a fairly unique medium, being interactive/player driven (AAA "cinematic" bullshit aside). People can get a hell of a lot more invested in something they feel does (or could) directly represent them and gives them (the illusion of) choice. Books, movies, TV are all passive in that regard. People still get antsy over representation in those mediums, but they are generally more detached.
One of the best characters in any RPG, that I can think of is Kreia. Very deep, interesting, etc. Can't be romanceable, and still gave more enjoyment than any BioWare character.

I miss the times when the games were made for the normal gamers - fat, hairy guys who never see the daylight and listen to music that represents the sounds made in pig farm. The games were about the damn game - kill the demons, destroy hell's forces, get the nice items, grind more for even better gear, kill the final boss and thats it. There's a reason why people are still playing Diablo 2 and DooM 2 you know. They are straight to point and not some dating simulator that literally have nothing to do with the real thing. Basically it goes like this scene with the char you like - option 1 - say something bad; option 2 - say something good. You pick option 2, like meter +1, wait for the next cutscene with this character, repeat for 5 more times - thats it you romanced (fucked) the character you like.. just like irl

I honestly think BW and many other companies simply don't want writers who are too smart nowadays as it would invariably lead to conflicts in terms of what kind of game content's being prepared to attract as big an audience as possible. Something's got to give, and in this case one of those somethings appears to be "overqualified" writers who aren't down with platitudes.
