Just like modern feminism isn't about the women anymore, it's only about the ideology and the "fight" for it (basically it lost focus, it isn't about gender equality, it's about male shaming), this issue isn't real either.
I have many female friends, none of them have a problem playing a male character in the Witcher for example, or Alan Wake. The story is about a male, and that is the end of it. Just like no male friends have a gripe with playing Lara as Tomb Raider.
WHY DOESN'T TOMB RAIDER HAVE A PLAYABLE MALE CHARACTER?!
See how ridiculous that question is? Same here with this topic, only in reverse.
Angry feminists and nerd white knights are doing this just for the sake of doing something. It's not a real issue.

Video games are not SUPPOSED to represent anyone. Video games are about narrative and gameplay. If someone decides to create a story about a male main character they should be free to do so. They don't OWE anyone anything.
Stop with this entitlement bullshit for crying out loud!

Haven't really followed this silly, pointless after-E3 media debate because I ain't got time for this kind of drama and the whining from bloggers, hipsters and pseudo-gamers irk me.
But this is the real "problem" (or better, non-problem): people who really love games couldn't care less about sexuality. They care about gameplay, writing, music et cetera, the ♂ / ♀ distinction is merely brain masturbation generated from individuals who are only asking for attention and clicks.
There have been countless of games with awesome badass female characters, including almost all the RPGs/MMOs around (and more), but nope, it will never be good enough. Aveline de Grandpré? Nein, that doesn't count, not a truefemalelead. She needed to perform snu-snu on weak unfortunate men, drink grog everyday, smoke like a Turk and have fists as big as Popeyes to be considered the bastion of femininity! 
(that said, I can't deny that Ubi's excuse about the animations was silly, but it's Ubi, they need to be understood...it's a special company  )

Personslly. I do starting suspecting feminisem is basically another version/form of communism which I consider " ideology trap" on which is tempting beause the whole "equality for alls" cliches but basically broken on its core. on the button line:
you don't need to be a feminist to respect women and support thier rights at level that makes sense of course.

Thing is, what he says is (at least partially) true. He is just rephrasing the "check your privilege" argument, though:

Is a round-a-bout way of saying "I've been a man all my life, and haven't considered things properly."
Anyways, it's true in that a lot of it comes from ignorance. Even something as simple as "A guy is a stud for sleeping around, a woman is a slut if she sleeps around" is a sexist attitude borne out of the ignorance that women don't/aren't-supposed-to enjoy sex.
That said, it's not just sexism that has this attitude - attitudes to Trans* persons and gays/lesbians both exhibit ignorance (an extreme version being the "We can turn you from gay to straight" Christian camps). I think the article would've worked better if he approached it from all angles, even if it was just to illustrate the point.
