Can't they harness the power of the cloud?

Sad thing is, if EA were more friendly with Valve, they'd probably move everything over to Steamworks. Considering we're in this mess because an online gaming server company is shutting down, Steam is the best move, now. The chances of Steam/Steamworks shuttering during the reasonable life-time of any game out right now is zero.

| Quote: | RPS- would it be too much to ask that you call out GLU Mobile as the responsible party for Gamespy’s shutdown? Gamespy was working until GLU Mobile bought Gamespy, and then GLU Mobile chose to shut down all of the Gamespy servers. It’s not Gamespy that’s at fault, it’s Gamespy’s owners. Point that out a few times to help shame them.
Disclaimer: I’m still patching and supporting Battlezone II in my spare time, on my own dime. We were one of the earliest 3rd party users of the Gamespy SDK, and had a small (~200 active players per week) when GLU Mobile yanked support for BZ2 on 2012/10/08. I had to do an emergency rewrite and patch release to change over to RakNet for matchmaking, NAT Negotiation, etc. Thus, I’ve got a legitimate annoyance with them too. |

EA
Seems like Project Reality and Forgotten Hope will be "immune" to this, thanks to the community:
| Quote: | | We've already developed our own master server, and it's running quite nicely, replacing the services that GameSpy hosted. FH2 contacted us and they will be using our servers as well, so they're fine too. After a bit of testing has occurred, this will be going out with v1.2, which will obviously be released before this shutdown occurs. |

| Quote: | Lost Planet 3 (PC/PS3): Migration to a new service has already begun, so we're not anticipating any online downtime. However, due to switching servers the leaderboards and current play stats will be reset. We'll have more information about the reset soon, so please check back. (Note the X360 version is unaffected.)
Age of Booty (All versions): Unfortunately there are no plans to update or migrate this title to a new service. It's been a great ride (2008/09-2014) and we thank everyone who sailed these seas. You can still play this title offline or grab friends for some LAN action, however. |

This should be the procedure for BF1942: http://forum.bf1942.sk/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1813
Apparently they're working on a new master list server which should simplify everything. BF2 should receive the same treatment as well

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-07-07-command-and-conquer-multiplayer-saved-following-gamespy-shutdown
| Quote: | After EA canned the Command & Conquer reboot and GameSpy shut its doors, the future looked bleak for the long-running real-time strategy series.
But now Command & Conquer enthusiasts have launched a server to keep multiplayer in a raft of games in the series alive, so even if it doesn't look like new games in the series will be released any time soon, we can dip into the past for some classic C&C action.
C&C: Online, available by registering with Revora and installing a launcher, is a free GameSpy emulating server for C&C games affected by the GameSpy closure, including Generals, Zero Hour, C&C3, Kane's Wrath and Red Alert 3.
It's designed to be a direct continuation of the online service that was available before GameSpy went down. You can even continue to use mods with it. |
