I am not to religious person. In fact I don't believe in god, hate church (greedy fuckers and pedophiles) and so on. I think It's all imagined fairytale just for cashgrab and it just catched on. People now just blindly believe all of this no matter whay only because they were born as christians (or whatever) and they don't even accept to think about it reasonably.
There is even no disscussion with believers and religious people while they straight ATTACK me for being atheist. True, I live in a hugely christian fucking country. Full of old, dumb stuck in their ways people who would literally beat You up or kill for saying shit about jesus or cross or whatever.
I say them - bible says that god created earth and animals+people but evolution and big bang theory says otherwise. One was not proven and Other one Is basically proven. And so on so on so on.
I bring this up because tomorrow is easter. As usually we are going to a church at 8am on sunday easter but this year I've said that I will not go. my mother went totally apeshit. Started yelling at me, that I am a stupid fuck and so on so on. She also said that COMPUTER made me the terrible way I am and ... You get it. After the church we are always going to my grandparent for holidays breakfast and dinner but my mother told me that I go go fuck myself and I will stay home and there are no holidays for me.
Yeah computer made me a terrible person I am now. I earn twice as much as she does, I know english and I have plenty of other skills she does not. COmputer really DESTROYED MY LIFE Sure, better to watch tv all the time. its not as bad as computer...

Later tomorrow I was suppose to drive and pick up my gf and bring her to my grandparents but now, I guess I will just go to her tomorrow morning and stay there for 3 days. Thankfully she is a reasonable atheist as me. Her parents are tolerable and not too religious too.
oh btw. My father is that kind of person who is not really too religious too but is afraid to speak when mom torns me apart because jesus... To be honest, there's simply no arguing with zealots so all you can do is grit your teeth and keep saving up so you can move out and have your own place, your own independence.

My mother is a very religiious person aswell, and we had huge discussions when I was young. Past a certain age, you just have to live by your personal convictions and tell your mother to accept it.
In my opinion you did the right thing by not accepting to go to church this time. Its the only way she will ever accept your opinion. But it will take time for her and in the end, she will never really accept it. She has to learn to tolerate your lifestyle none the less.
(Be prepared though, she will pray for you!)

Only me and my brother in my family are atheists, but none are trying to talk the others into believing what they do, just live our lives without insulting eachother.

But yeah Croatia is the same way, actually worse. Both Poland and Cro have a deal with the Vatican where we give them money for shit! well for a blessing or something except Croatia gets absolutely robbed, we are much smaller than Poland also broke, Poland took a lot of money from the EU funds as well and currently we gave more than we got back, I thought this (atheistic) government was going to do something about that highway robbery contract but they don't have the balls apparently
Best thing to do is not go into discussions like that. No matter what kind of belief or ignorance they try to spread on you, just say you're not interested and talk about something else.
No point to bring in evolution or anything else when people are unwilling to listen. There's more to people than their belief and best to focus on the other stuff rather than what they belief in.
That being said, you're 25 it's about time you leave the nest if you are not allowed to live the life you choose. In the end you're her son, she's your mother and you'll have to try and make it work and that might mean living on your own.
I don't think there is anything you can do, certainly not unless your mother realizes and accepts that you will not change just in the same way that she won't. I guess you get along until the religious card is drawn?

I believe in the same way you do. I have a 5 year old boy, myself and the wife agreed we would be hypocrites to have him christened, so we didn't.. we were scowled at and made to feel we were wrong. He will decide when hes older, either way it will make not 1 fucking bit of difference.
Ahhh, so good to have moved out after high school (studies in another city) and being completely independent since I was 23 (am 25 now, same as you). I see my parents once in 2-3 months, usually around holidays like now, and these are the only times I'm in church - it does not bother my that much, I just stand and think about whatever is on my mind at that time. It pleases my mother and I won't die from an hour in a church.

To me integrity and consistency are the only thing of value, if your family members persistently indulge in the esoteric and the supernatural, I say that you shouldn't change who you are trying do adapt to such gullible and absurd persons. Am i the only one here whose whole family is atheist/agnostic/whatever? The only one religious is my grandmother, all her three sisters are not only nonreligious they are against the church. A couple of months back we visited one of her sisters (around 85 years old), who said that when she dies, she doesn't want a funeral and that her body should go to science. After some joking around (we said that there has to something when she goes) she said that if we bury her and there's a priest present she'll come out/back I almost died laughing.
Depends on where you live I guess. Estonia is a very non-religious country and Im quite glad it's the way it is here. religious people get bashed here a bit too much at times, even though they aren't really that annoying here. I know quite a few of them. You can talk about religion with them, but no point trying to convert them and they dont try to convert you. Most of the time they're totally ok. some of them only piss me off a bit on facebook when they spam their religious stuff and it makes me wonder why would religious people want to waste so much time of their life away. believe in whatever you want, but dont make that your life priority. it's kinda sad

Only big surprise to me is why some parts in the US are doing the opposite, I always laugh when those bible belt nuts say their nation was build on religion/Christianity seems to me they only had selective memory of their 'founding fathers'.
Religion will always be around tho, and in some cases that's not really that bad.
When my grand parents were 60 years married, they had a Mass to commemorate it. Me and my brother and two cousins are atheists and after much discussion, we decided to come to church since we considered it not to be a religious matter but a matter of respect for our grandparents. On the other hand, we didn't sing any songs, we didn't go to the front during communion and didn't join in any of the other "activities" during the Mass. When my aunt asked us to read some stuff (which was from the Bible) we all refused so my youngest cousin (who is whipped by her parents) had to read it all.
The point of my story: sometimes you got to go with the flow because it's the right thing to do, not because you believe in it. If you only have to go to church once a year, it's not a big deal - if it makes your family happy, just do it. This isn't about religion but about what your family values and yes, your mother was rude as hell but how about your grandparents? They won't be seeing you because of this through no fault of their own.

I don't want to be rude, but this is stupid. This problem with rabid believers is not related to backwater east and progressive west/north, it's related to Catholicism only, because Catholicism is based on GUILT. Kids (which are raised as Catholic Christians) are learned from small age that they are born guilty from the sin of the first man, and this creates a big psychological impact if a person is not strong enough to break those "chains" (e.g. not inteligent enough or simply raised too strictly, so she becomes a grown up person living in constant fear of damnation in hell). This is not the case with Protestantism and Ortodox church. There is a lot of literature on this topic, even wikipedia explains it. Especially in eastern European countries where Ortodox church is dominant, religion is a joke because popes don't make a big fuss about you being damned from the birth and 95% of so called believers are giving lip service.
The reason Scandinavians don't give a shit about this is due to Christianity was never strong there in the first place. So please read some more about differences between Christian churches (I consider myself to be an agnostic, but this topic is very interesting to me because it explains many events from history).
