I know that I am still an intern but holy shit, looking at a code for 9 hours straight...
When I get home, last thing on my mind is to turn on my computer...I honestly don't want to do anything with it at all.
How does one balance work and free time? Or there is no such a free time when you are developer?

Never was a coder, but did work as a network engineer and usually what I did when arriving at home was: wash up, cook some food, watch some tv/episode generally relaxing and usually it was only 3 hours after I came home that I'd spend time on the PC.
So maybe try something to unwind before sitting at your PC. And if you are into it, a work out after a mentally hard day can do wonders as well.

Actually for programmers there's always some work to do

If you do not wish to view and fix code anytime of the day then it is not your passion and probably not a job you will be doing long term...
All coders I have met actually have some sick need to fix shit and love looking at it and working it out as a puzzle, it don't ever seem to get old for them and they do it every hour of the day.

Answer is simple though. People are different, some can handle doing it, and some can't.

soo, your problem is that when you get back home you feel like you should continue learning ? I think I don't understand why YOU have to use your computer at home.

That. If you don't want to be an average programmer with average pay you have to do your stuff at home and always continue education.
It's easy for me because at work I do business programs and at home i program games so it's pure fun for me.

I like doing it, but on different terms I guess..when its work they get the 9-5 and thats it, Ill finish tomorrow.
But if I'm doing coding for myself, Ill sit down work on it, get more ideas, work on it, hit a roadblock of a bug or way to do something...next thing I know its 5am.
Or same for playing a game, or just fucking off on the PC. That time is a totally different set of 'hours' than me working on it. I see them totally different.
One is my job, I do what Im told. The other is my time, I do what I like..so to me the hours are exclusive to each other. I work from home, and sometimes my wife will ask me "how long you going to sit at that computer?"
I reply "what? I just got off work an hour ago".
I guess its to me the same as someone that repairs TV's for a living. Just because they poke around in the insides of them all day, doesn't mean they lose the enjoyment of coming home and watching a few shows/movies they like on one.

Well, it all depends on the frustration level. If I had a good time, no frustration, a smooth day. I can come home and still do something on a private project or some fun coding. But if I got stuck in frustration all fucking day, there's no way I am going through frustration lane again for a private project
But you have to make some rules for yourself. As DXWarlock describes, you can easily get stuck on a bug, *timemachine*, 5AM. This fucks up an entire week, well at least in my case (have to get up at 7AM...). I am not fully into IT at work, I am writing loads of scripts, doing data analysis, automatiing analyses for others, writing research reports, designing experiments, meetings etc. So there are days where I almost do not see a computer at work. It is tempting then to go home and go work on the private project. I try to put the pc away before 11AM, sleep before 12AM. Sporting 2 or 3 times 1-2h a week. And saturday mornings are running + brunching with the GF days.
It's shocking how quickly after graduation the work/private stuff kicks in. Go figure for people with children how much more they have to manage time, stuff and emotions. I can be pissed at my gf after a crappy day. She understands it, she forces me to leave work at work and be nice to her. Cant be pissed at your kids all day because you had a crappy day... They won't understand and they wont correct you...

Become the boss, then others do as you say, and projects are yours. Of course it has its downsides, like working 14 hours a day, but when you go home, you can make love to your hot girlfriend and sleep.
