Does anyone else get these?

I've had maybe half a dozen now, they go like this: They act as ISP representatives and inform you that your PC is 'being hacked'... they will 'shut down the internet' to your house if you don't go to your PC and do what they say. They basically tell you to allow remote assistance before doing who knows what.

The first few times they called I told them to piss off. Then I told them to go ahead, disconnect my internet, they hung up. Just now another call and I had them going for around 5 minutes before telling them I had a Mac, at which point they said they'd send a technician around (they knew the address). They got my wife's mother one time but I intercepted it.

How are you supposed to get rid of these morons?

ask your telephone company to trace the number, then file a suit.

i dont know about the law in australia, but it could help to record them the next time they call/ if they call again.
in germany this would not be admissible in court, since the other person has to explicitly give their consent to being recorded, but maybe in australia there is no law like that.

I just let them get all confused when I tell them I dont have a start button, after about 15 minutes they usually either work out that I dont rn Windows or they just give up and hang up.

See I lead an exciting life.

I get the occasional marketing call, usually asking about how I should choose that electricity or telephone company over the existing one but other than that I've not had any direct scam calls.

I do get a ton of emails from everything about Facebook, Blizzard, some African rich millionaire or Australian bank company but those just get deleted.
(If the mail is serious it would be either written in Swedish or it would be from a trusted address or a address I know, usually both.)

EDIT: I'm glad they stopped sending stuff like "vaigra" and other suspicious product advertisement though.
(Those were pretty common some years ago, now it's money instead of potency I guess scamming has trends too.)

I do feel a bit sorry for those with less understanding about this (Often elderly people.) but that trick has been going on for years from door to door salesmen to telephone calls and now e-mails.
(And probably social stuff like say Facebook or Google+ but I don't use that.)

Had this here in UK a fair bit, they were always indian, and at times got pretty hostile, one even went as far as saying my pc was causing great harm to others and could be me in a financial loss due to my pc being the machine robbing them of money.

I just get really abusive and lol and shit. Its kinda amusing to me but to some poor nub that don't know right from wrong in this stuff could get stung I guess ;D

I got into a nice discussion about this on another forum, because my mother got a call like this (they claimed they were Microsoft support, she didn't fall for it though). Turns out people all over the world are getting these calls.

Some of the guys on the forum even managed to infect the callers with viruses, had them remote into prepared VMs with neatly named virus files all over the desktop. The "tech support" guys download them very quickly ("bankaccountdata.exe" Laughing ). They are complete morons, didn't even believe they were in a VM, even after being shown the VMWare tray icon.

I still hope I'll get a call from them, but never did. Sad

It does say something about the state of current personal computer security though; if it is actually cheaper to hire hundreds of guys to call random numbers and have people download viruses, rather than exploiting a backdoor, all those auto updates and firewalls are doing their job.

We use to receive at least one scummy phonescam per day here (father has a small agency and I help him), but none of them went this far with the idiocy Razz

Lots of them are just people trying to sell us the most improbable stuff, or clumsily wanting us to get tricked by silly ploys, with false banks, services, you name it Laughing
I usually tell them to fuck themselves in the butt and the conversation ends there with both the parties being satisfied xD

In germany if you get an unwanted phone call and you tell them to not call you again, then they have to comply. Or else the fines start at 50.000€ if they call you a second time. Any citizen can call the Bundesnetzagentur (Federal Network Agency) and file a complaint, it should be that easy Smile

And even if you are a customer of a company, they need your consent to call you for advertisement purposes, else they'll have to pay the fine too.

Tell them that you're going to comply and then give them some random address and keep yelling at them not to turn off your internet because you need to look at your youtube cats.

I've had them too. I tell them I don't have a computer in the house.

They got an older woman I now. She fell for it. They were calling her a stupid bitch in the end when she was questioning them. They got downright nasty when they realized they had a vulnerable person who knew something was up. They did get remote access but I don't think anything happened.

I wish I had some leet hacking skills so I could blow up their whole network, bunch of scammers.

how does the german idea work with out of country calls ?

In the UK we have TPS and if you are on that companies are not aloud to cold call you.

How we we still get countless calls from 'Tmobile' (for example) with a thick indian accent and from (one presumes) India. If you report them you are just told, "They out out of country and therefore out of our reach" (the fact they are selling contracts for a UK company seems to escape them)

So I am just curious how does Germany handle out of country calls ?

yeah I have all withheld numbers blocked, so generally I dont get them unless they spoof they caller-ID or use VOIP, I can bar international calls completely as I have relatives abroad.

But I really hate the idea of paying for a landline and having to block incoming calls, it just grates.

But anyway I was just curious how Germany deals with the issue (if it is even an issue with English not being the native language I suppose)

Your phone company has their own blacklist service, not just your home phone unit. And hiding the caller ID doesn't help then.
You can ban all calls from India.. unless your relatives are from there Razz

Jesus fucking christ, you know more about my phone provider than they do, and for what its worth no my phone provider won't do per country blocks.
