Stephen Kings Doctor Sleep is ok (its very predictable though) but its short enough at 450 pages and an easy enough read, I just finished it

I'm interested in reading some lovecraft with cthulhu and such. Never read anything, but i always find it enjoyable when meeting copies of that lore in games and such. Any books to recommend?

I recently finished "Blood Song" and "The Giver". Blood Song is an excellent book, definitely going to be one of the classics in the fantasy genre. I recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy. The Giver was a good idea executed properly IMO. The ending I thought was crap.
On to the next book!

Anything with Lovecraft. Imo dont skip any of his writings!!!

Finished 'A Higher Call'. Great book, highly recommended.
(The one about the German BF 109 escorting the damaged B-17 out of danger, Epic-Thread regulars know which.)
The book mostly deals with the German pilot, with a few chapters dedicated to the bomber's crew and one or two side-stories about notable people Franz met during the war (like his squadron mates, his superiors, other high profile aces, etc).
It's basically a wartime biography, starting with how he got recruited into the Luftwaffe, his service in Africa, Sicily, and the fateful anti-bomber campaign that resulted in the encounter.
Even the main event is just a chapter or so, the rest is about his further wartime service, how he got himself into Adolf Galland's JV44, how the nazi leadership collapsed from a soldier's perspective, and how he went west to surrender to the Americans instead of the Soviets. Then the rest is a brief post-war summary of both pilot's lives and how they managed to find each other.
Very refreshing to see the war from the other side. This whole book could be made into another Das Boot masterpiece if competent people decided to put it on film.

Can anyone recommend a book about things like quantum mechanics and string theory? I don't want a dry theory book, but it doesn't have to be "physics for dummies" either.

The Road to Reality: A Complete Guide to the Laws of the Universe
This should be a quite a nice book. It features math so be prepared but it is in no way a "dry theory book"(which in my opinion by far is the best way to learn physics).

Done reading the last wish and in the process of reading blood of elves. It started a bit confusing as they included characters which i didn't know squat about. Ciri for example. It seems the publishing company decided to skip Sword of destiny. Witcher wiki said something about it being obsolete... Obviously i don't know. I'm soon finished with Blood of elves, and still i feel that i've missed out on something important. For those who've have read it, how important is the book? There has been a good amount of reintroducing done in the blood of elves so i've catched up on certain things, but still.. Do you consider the book a must?

It's a sidequel to Blindsight - raises some interesting topics (nature of consciousness and intelligence, empathy, post-humanism etc) via spouting pseudoscientific drivel non-stop. Must read. There are also vampires and zombies.

First and Only - 1st from the Gaunt's Ghosts series of W40k books. Mainly Imperial Guard vs Chaos, but with political plots etc. Pretty nice.
dsergei --> Echopraxia is ok, but Blindsight was way better.

I'm pretty late with it, must have missed the post... but if you are still looking for one: The quantum universe by Brian Cox and Jeff Forshaw
It's not a dry textbook and it's written so it's quite comprehensible yet not dumbed down. Don't think it touched string theory in much detail.
One of the better ones that I read on it was: Warped Passages by Lisa Randall. But it has been quite a while since I read that one. So can't be sure.
There is one that I'm having my eyes on to read: The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene. |
