Why do you want to change careers? Are lawyers not well paid in Brazil?

Well, I don't plan on staying in brazil for very long... and I hate being a lawyer. I'd rather make less money on something more interesting, living in a safer country.

Why did you become lawyer in the first place? Just curious because one of my friends is studying to be a lawyer but he will be very terrible one. He just doesn't have it in him.

My father was a lawyer... at first I wanted nothing to do with it, as I always had an interest on tech/computers and biology. I did 3 years of environmental engineering but at some point I just realized it wasn't for me. Then I tried journalism for a year but gave up because the job market here is terrible (you really have to sell your soul to make a few bucks). Then I thought I was getting old without any college degree, so I went for the safe thing: law. Although I hate most aspects and always did, it was easy to study, easy to find a job, easy to make some money... I'm pretty sure I could be a great lawyer, but I just hate it. You need "connections", important "friends", fake smiles and a lot of stuff I just can't stand...
Maybe I'll study biology and become a scientist eventually, but right now I just need another way of making money.

Ruby seems quite interesting, I'll look into it. Is there a demand for freelance work?

Here's the thing... what do you actually enjoy doing or have interests in. Saying computers is very broad and kinda makes me think it's not really an interest.
No matter what field most of the time a lot can be learned by yourself. But you need the interest to go through with it. Money reasons will be good for short term but seriously go and find something you love doing if you are going to re-educate yourself. You'll be 10x better at it.

I enjoy using linux (seriously dat sudo pacman -Syu is fun), playing dota2, humping, reading news, finding ebooks,...
Seriously though, this idea that work is supposed to be fun, or something I love doing... I just never believed it. I tried many different things, never found anything I'd do for free that actually paid me money. Sure some people are lucky (like astronauts, F1 drivers, etc.), but I just don't see it happening to me. I don't want to be rich or powerful, so that takes away many jobs already (jobs that people do only or mostly for the big paycheck and/or power), I don't want to wake up early (again, most jobs), I'd rather not have to deal with too many people (so working at home would be better, but not really necessary), and the ideal would be something where I can take vacations whenever I want to, because I don't want to define my life with work... I just want a convenient way of making some money.
Maybe I'm just too old to follow my dreams

Come to America, you'll have so many lawsuits you won't know what to do with them. It's kind of like that steam sale meme where the guy is dropping the steam icons. You'll be rolling in the dough.

I think your going to be hard pressed to find anything like that:
Little to no training, easy to do with self training, fun, do it from home, not deal with people much, own schedule, and no upfront cost.
Anything like that is already being tried by every other person out there..And for every one you see doing it and people going "Man i should do that!" there is 1,000 already trying and failing to make any worthwhile money at it.

You kinda got the wrong idea... I just don't want something I need to go to school to learn, it's not like I can't dedicate myself, it just has to be something I can learn by myself. And it doesn't have to be fun, as long as it doesn't take most of my life and most of my soul (like being a lawyer...). And I'm not expecting to get rich with this either, it's just some extra money. If I wanted easy money I'd be a drug dealer here

If you really commit to it, software/web development is the way to go for a job like that. You can learn it yourself but it takes time and dedication. The demand is usually so high you can easily find a job to work from home at your own leisure (after you know what you are doing ofc).

I see standalone projects for Ruby developers, so yes. Usually when a company finds someone good they won't let him go that easily (Yes, I know, the horrors of being in demand ) | If I commit to learn it properly will you hire me, humpjobcreator garusa?

You can go to Uruguay, buy legalized cannabis at $1 a gram, then come back to Brazil and sell it at $2+..infinite money
Watch out for the huehue bosses though, I don't want you to be decapitated
No seriously, good luck with your new idea. You'll need to have a lot of patience if you really want to get into serious programming, but it's definitely not a mission impossible, on the contrary. I too tried back then (2006-7), but one year of computer engineering was enough for me. I even passed several exams, but nope, not my thing really.
I became a management engineer and that was possibly even worse, because it happened in the middle of the crisis and companies were shutting down (they still are as we speak)...so yeah, I might go to Uruguay after all. xD
