That icepick trick remainds me of Jim Carrey's character from "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone".

the trick part is sometimes too staged, but I do acknowledge the hardships he goes through to get things done. the endurance part of his stuff seems pretty hard core.
I don't get what is so amazing in holding his breath. Human beings are meant to breed. The way he speaks, it's because his brain is damaged from all the bullshit he's done. Allow me to breathe past this idiot.
This man lives not a normal life. He's a wizard, the devil give him this extraordinary power. Why? Because he operates with inhuman and magic powers, and he gets a lot of it. I warn everyone severely: Do not have contact with this man. Better read and study the Bible.
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"
It would be funny if he actually had people break into celebrity houses in order to plant cards in fruits
btw Jim Carreys character in Incredible Burt Wonderstone is pretty much a parody of this guy.
But still, all the shit he goes through with his endurance performances, whether it is holding is breath or sitting a box for 45 days with no food is pretty much amazing - and not just the events but the preparation needed for something like that. Some willpower on that guy.
i hate tv 'magic', i really do. some of it is interesting, but most of it leaves you with an unpleasant feeling of trick tv editing, visual effects, and setups...
respect for live/stage illusionists though, some of the stuff they do is amazing.

Holding your breath is one thing, holding it for 17 minutes, that's something special. Some of his tricks are just tv magic, in that the audience is in on it and such, but still, the preparation and wiillpower for some of his tricks (like the ice pick, 10 years practice!?) is just admirable. I think Blaine goes beyond the tricks that the Dynamo's and the like do. He's like that Chinese guy in The Prestige, the performance is his live and vice versa.
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.
The fuck has someone a reason to hold his breath for 17 minutes? Will power? Special?
I'd like to see you do it, spending years to accomplish something truly unique. I don't necessarily admire the tricks, but the actual will to do it. I guess some people don't understand that.

But what is the point? Should he be admired because he does something ridiculously moronic but is "truly unique"? If I have the will to cut my fingers one by one on video, will you admire me too? "I'd like to see you do it" I don't want to do it, and there is nothing to admire in ill will. Let him have the will to go to Africa and feed people and I'll admire him, not because he put his already retarded brain at risk by not breething.

Fame, recognition? Why does anyone have a reason to break any record?
And it takes some damn willpower to stay in a glass box for 45 days with no food. Plus if you listen to his talk, it took him years of training to reach those 17 minutes. Years of training for a single "trick".

What's the point of running 100m onder 10 seconds? What's the point of sports in general? Games? Music? These things don't feed africa either (always a lame excuse in any argument). What's the point of living anyway?
Did he really stick an icepick thru his hand in real life?
yes, I mean there is no trick involved here apparently, he probably just stuck a needle through the same part over an over again until every blood vessel there was destroyed.
It's not a trick its just stupid. "Hi this is David Blaine, and welcome to jackass"
You can't destroy a single blood vessel and expect there not to be blood, there are still hundreds of capillaries going to every bit of your tissue. He probably had tube(s) implanted into his body, and the skin above is fake.
there is "magic" (illusion, sleight of hand etc) and then there is Blaine. he is so far and beyond, it's not even funny anymore (well, ok, it is hehe).
imhol he could explain "you" everything about a "trick" mini step by mini step and you you would still not understand anything at all rofl.

Running fast means your body is well "tuned".
Firing a gun and hitting the target in a range means you have great eyesight and brain-eye-hand co-ordination.
Making "good" music makes you creative.
Holding your breath only means you have the will and ability to do it.
People generally want to be fit, or be creative because that makes them better individuals. Therefore someone who is good at sports or arts is admired.
Holding your breath does not make you a better individual. There's nothing to admire here. Sure you can admire the dedication but it makes way more sense to admire the dedication of someone who is actually doing something productive eg a hard working scientist.

good job trying to rationalise what he does ^^. Good luck with that
Running fast or holding your breath for a long time is just tuning your body in different ways is it not? Neither are a very skill based "sports". They both require primarily will and dedication to train hard to get your body to a point where it can do something, whether it is running 100m under some time or holding your breath for 17 minutes. For me the distinction is arbitrary.
