Endless Space is more strategy and less space, battles are very restricted. |
Isn't SOS Empire more of a RTS than 4x strategy. Is there diplomacy, ship building/design, empire building?

Isn't every strategy game being set in space called a 4x these days?

Star Wars Rebellion
Rough around the edges, buggy, some bad design decisions, etc. But damn, it's fun conquering the SW galaxy, sending iconic characters on missions, building armadas, etc.
The closest any game got to it was of course Empire at War, but it's a pale imitation. Sure, it has better gameplay design over all, but failes miserably to capture that certain something.

I think anybody replying to you should keep this qualification in mind...
4x is an open-ended term. I mean, would AI Wars fit under that umbrella? There's also the turn-based versus real-time question. There are also different kinds of combat, some entirely hands-off (Endless Space). You want good combat, that's a start, but what other qualifications are there?
For me, the best real-time one with traditional RTS-style combat is Sins of a Solar Empire. The best turn-based with customization (which to me is crucial to the turn-based game, like in Alpha Centauri) is Galactic Civilizations II. If complexity is also important there are some superior indie or near-indie titles mentioned in this thread. Trying to find balance in some of those games can be difficult, though.

hmmm...contradicts what I have been coming across. Been reading that it is still qwerky, has optimization issues, takes forever to play a round, and they (developers) are out of money and it looks like it will never get completely get fixed (though it looks nice). |
I'm sorry, you must've missed the picture.
