My impressions:
1. Can't turn off the cockpit. It takes a big part of the screen that could be used to see more interesting stuff.
2. Can't fly the ship with the classic controls. Only the new "follow the cursor".
3. No autopilot or seta. If I want to dock, I must fly really close to the docking area and only then I can see an icon. I must fly around trying to find somewhere to dock.
4. Map is horrible. You can see the station, subareas and parts of the station. But they are mixed together. I mean, isn't indentation a common practice among programmers? Couldn't we have some indentation in the map list? I can't find anything. Can't zoom or move the map.
5. The menu system is weird. Some options seem misplaced. For example, the "return to ship" option is in the "crew" section.
6. Where is my shield and hull indicators? Ships are firing at me. I collide with stuff sometimes. But I see nothing going down.
7. Speed indicator? In X3 I could see my speed and target's speed. I could match them with a keybind. Now there is just a blue/red bar.
8. Cargo dropped by ships I destroyed doesn't show on the map.
9. Can't "target nearest enemy" or "target next enemy". Really guys. I could do that in X-Wing.
The list goes on. This game is definitely not X4. It's a completely different game.

Um...anyone ever got around to actually buying ships/stations? I've been asking dozens of ships for ship dealer locations and nobody know anything. They happily direct me towards all sorts of merchants and officers, except shipyards.
I assume stations are done through architects, but so far, not a single ship dealer in sight.

Try to ask some of the personnel ships flying around the stations, like the guard ships, not just random people because most of the time they don't know shit.

I've been concentrating on ships with target-boxes, not just random station traffic. Nobody know where to find one, not the police, not the freighters, not fighter wings, etc.
Starting to wonder if buying freighters actually made it into the release build, or we can only get them through story/capture.

It's in the front. Fly close to the front and an icon will show up.

Nice. I quicksave and get a "serious error". Now everytime I try to load it, "serious error". No other savegames, so I must start from zero.

Here is what i think and clearly the same thought comes to almost everyone's mind - these issues were addressed in another x games. They did it wrong, then users spammed and then devs fixed it. So they did the same mistake again or just devs intentionally made this game a crappy one with minimum efforts and trying to sell us the idea that is the best choice to X games. Clearly it's not and i bet they knew that before start - look at forums before launch and half of users were sceptical about one ship idea, huge stations, dx9 and so on. But egosoft went their way no matter what. So i guess they were trying to fool us that they were making something uber while drinking beer and laughing how much money will they make selling this piece of garbage. 30 devs 7 years and one flyable ship? come on.... Oh and i bet this game will be awesome as it always been, but without egosoft help - heavy minded modders will make this game somewhat playable and enjoyable to every X series fan. It's genuine idea - release shitty game with powerful modding tools and wait while simple users will make this game adorable to all. Yeah i'm outraged here, but there is none points in egosoft favor at all. Let's not pretend that there is some

Already played Xtended a lot hehe, I'll see if there were any big changes since the end of 2012, if so I'll be sure to give it a try again. |
good so based on what you have seen in x: rebirth and x-tended mod what do you think about direction should have egosoft aimed for ? rebirth or x-tended with all those interesting plots? Keep in mind that X-tended mod was made by simple users without salaries and so on and they did all that job in two years and rebirth... we allready know how many nerds and for how many years they were trying to make X series worse |
First of all if they redesigned the universe like that of X-rebirth that would be no problem. The new highways are an interesting approach, if only they were actually used by NPC's and if only the traffic was real. The menu system in X3 could have been more streamlined by adding in dropdown menu's and small visualisations of what things would do. The map system used in X3 was very effective in my opinion and needed no work, perhaps a real time 3d overview but that would end up hard to control. If they added more race specific traits/mechanics/ships/models and tweaked the overall balance to have an actual working economy and interesting story line they would have had a small gem on their hands. They could have easily made capital ships more interesting to fly by intelligently using the new highway system to give smaller ships an edge. The capital ships would be unable to use the highways, next to that they could have given larger ships a more autonomous way of functioning, making you act more like a captain/admiral instead of direct control. Imagine a crew interface where you with a small minigame/interface manage the crew to make the ship perform its actions. This way people could fly grand capital ships and still have interesting gameplay. Perhaps a real docking system and intuitive carrier/fleet controls would have provided the real end game possibilities X3 needed combat wise. A possibility of starting your own empire with real diplomatic control and effects?
There were a thousand possible additions to the X-series, they could have added RTS elements and improved small ship combat, instead they have chosen to make an unwieldy game that tries to do the things X3 did in a more streamlined fashion, at which it fails quite badly in my opinion.

What I always find absolutely terrifying is that apparently developers have no idea whatsoever about the games they have made, why they where popular to a certain group of people and even knowing who those people are and more importantly are not.
I don't know why they decided it would be a good idea to remove most of the functionality that made the previous games what they where (you have to click on enemies to lock on? ...wut?) and to try to appeal to a casual audience.
Is it really just greed? Surely if money was your number one goal you would be making Assassin's Duties or whatever and not nerdy games for nerdy people!?
What I don't get is why don't they get that a certain kind of game has a certain kind of audience and CoD college frat boys don't WANT these games.
This is more in general and not just about X: Rebirth but yeah I don't get it...
I haven't lost hope for Egosoft yet and I hope they know that they fucked up and more importantly how they fucked up but it's pretty sad really.

something that is really bothering me, is the difficulty to buy something. I.e. the game tells me to buy .. a hacker drone .. or 8 marines etc. But half the universe is RED (enemy) and it's close to impossible to find anyone not hostile who sells what i need and when i ask for, i keep being sent to hostile merchants lol .. i mean what's the point ?

@Tungsten
Just give it 6-12 months. Developers and modders will fix all the fuck ups that are bothering you so much.
Hopefully, it won't run like shit by the time they are done too lol

I just hope people aren't expecting an X game from Star Citizen because I bet a lot of people will be let down then.

If i didnt knew better, i wouldve thought i bought an Early Access Pre Alpha from Steam. All those positive interviews that made me shell out the money suddenly seem like a giant ruse.

Fair enough. I really just wanted a fun new space game, doesn't necessarily need to have the depths of an X game...I wanted to fly around in pretty space, do some trading, pirating, general dicking around, which I'm expecting to be able to do in the online Star Citizen world. Squadron 42, is something else I get that, which is fine too for the missions and not the laughable X campaign.
I'm just annoyed that after waiting for this X game I'm now gonna go back to X3. Ah well.

This game was a complete letdown. Clunky UI, piles of bugs, non-functional missions, crashing game, etc. - I particularly enjoyed finishing a mission and then for some reason ending up 15000000km away from my waypoint for no reason, just insta-teleported there from "9km to waypoint" to a black space screen with glitchy graphics.
The "Interface design" was done by a complete moron with userability knowledge at nil.
Maybe this would be an interesting game if they fixed all the bugs, but I just do not have the patience to be an alpha-tester for a product they have released at full RP. The price is basically a robbery. 7 years development? Holy shit that's bad.
Yes, yes I'm back.
Somewhat.
