|
 |
So was playing some Prophecy of Pendor (Mount and Blade mod) when all of a sudden my PC shut off. Thinking DOH.. my new corsair 850watt PSU just died... i take off the covers and try booting up the PC again. Takes a few tries and it comes on. Within about 5 seconds i see sparks and some flame on the GPU (HD7950), near where the 2 six pin connectors are. Shit, so i power it off obviously and the flames stop. Remove the GPU, PC powers on but does not POST and does not get into BIOS. Try resetting the CMOS, reseating the battery, removing RAM dimms, unplugging hard drives, etc. No BIOS. Only flashing blue lights on the MOBO (MSI Z77-G45). Run to the store and buy a 500 watt PSU for testing purposes. Powers on but same deal with the blinking blue LEDs.
I conclude my mobo was taken out by the GPU. Hopefully my 3570K is unscathed. Sound about right? Any other suggestions? Looking at the back of the GPU on the PCB i dont see any burn marks or black scorch marks or anything like that. Strange.

I've used GPUs at extreme clocks (for air cooling) I even used a GPU without a cooler, I have never heard of anything like this. Might've been a short circuit like werelds says.

Its not the GPU but power circuitry. Mosfet or a capacitor short.

Not fire.. but some smoke, yes. From my old 8800GTX, it lasted me 6 months and I believe it couldn't take it anymore after I tried to play Crysis 1 at high details. Thankfully I got the 4870 as a replacement, that one lasted me until 2011 when I installed Rage. It died two days later along with my PSU and motherboard

Got new board coming in on friday (same MSI). Then I'll see if my CPU is fukked. Will have to hold off on a new GPU for a while.

Nothing yet, seen some R9 380 benches but those are looking like 960 levels of pathetic. More and more I'm considering just going all out for a 970

It has survived one week with 32°C inside and Geralt running almost 24/7, the ultimate fire test xD

Of course it's 960 level of pathetic, because it's in the same price range.
R9 390 is in the same price range as 970.

Asrock X670E Steel Legend
G.Skill Trident Z5 32 GB DDR5 6400Mhz

R9 390 is in the same price range as 970. | Well it's not supposed to, especially since it's released months after the 960
It was supposed to be beating the shit out of it.
Still waiting for more reviews on all new and "new" AMD GPU's

Ouch, those can become quite nasty.
Only had things like that happening at work. Tho the fires were rare, usually was just shorts with no flame going on.

...close enough
RIP Corsair TX 650
Bought one of these, should be more than enough:
http://xfxforce.com/en-us/products/ts-series-full-wired/ts-series-550w-psu-p1-550s-xxb9
Everything else was prohibitively expensive since, you know, I just bought a 970 a few weeks back. I'll know when it gets here if anything else besides the PSU went kaput but I think not.

Not yet...
But it might be soon. I should know stuff like this, but... will I have any issues if I connect my PC to an ungrounded socket?

Nope. It's just for your protection in case of catastrophic electrical failure.
