Problems with their protection are notorious... And no one seems to like the game enough to make a proper crack. They also tend to blacklist all known keys with every new patch/update. It's not starforce, but they are persistant enough to make running some clone version a major PITA.
In Germany there's a new version available since two weeks, it's called Spellforce Platinum Edition. It's on DVD and it contains the current versions of Spellforce+both addons and you don't need a key anymore. Maybe they will release this version in English too? I don't know but I guess it would help many people because it's easily playable without much work. There's a nice Blindwrite clone release which I'm grabbing right now.
PROPER NOTE:
WaLMaRT claims in their nfo that the game is
unprotected, which is a lie. This game requires a
serial to play and WaLMaRT have stolen this serial
from web. Their installer adds the serial to the
windows registry here:
in the CDKEY field. The serial stored there is
**** and it can be easilly
googeled with date of posting before WaLMaRT pre
In addition their installer crashes on x86 systems
at the end of installation and deletes all the
files. We know why, but if WaLMaRT can google to
steal a serial (or even steam emu) they can also
find a solution for themselves

We have patched the serial check in our crack, so
no serial is required

Right now it's mostly bugfixes and making sure the game works on modern systems, but I've heard rumblings about a completely new renderer in the future.
