Bates Motel

Quote:
“Bates Motel,” serves as a contemporary prequel to the genre-defining film, “Psycho,” and promises to give viewers an intimate portrayal of how Norman Bates’ psyche unravels through his teenage years.

Fans will have access to the dark, twisted backstory and learn first hand just how deeply intricate his relationship with his mother, Norma, truly is and how she helped forge the most famous serial killer of them all.

“Bates Motel” is produced by Universal Television for A&E Network. Carlton Cuse ("Lost") and Kerry Ehrin ("Friday Night Lights") serve as executive producers for Carlton Cuse Productions. (Source: A&E)

So after hearing some good reviews about this one, I decided to give it a shot and I ended up watching all 4 episodes inside 2 days. Wow, I'm really glad I gave this show a chance. Enjoying the story and the mystery so far, I actually haven't been pulled into a show this much for a while now. Going to keep watching this season. Gets a nice thumbs up from me.

They already got re-newed for a second season next year as well.

Anyone else watching this?

I tried to watch the first episode but I definitely did not feel comfortable with the weird mother and son relation that is going on.

lol, yes there is definitely some very awkward sexual tension between the mother and son, but if you can get past that its a pretty decent show.

don't want to spoil much but...

The sexual tension is intentional. His mother will die. he'll keep her body. run the motel. and kill people. Like... nobody here watched psycho?

After the 10 min preview i was all wtf is this shit. But after watching it for a while... actually a decent show. It has bits of the hitchockian suspense sprinkled around in a few episodes. Been watching it ever since.

Only drawback is that the show feels grounded in like 1950s in some scenes.... (school, the clothes, the attitude, the way they talk) and then they go back to current times with iphones and shit. It's odd, but it works.

And highmore is fucking brilliant as a creep. Plays a good Bates... would love for them to continue the show and then so an episode of the movie. Would be kick ass. But he's in highschools Sad Would prolly be in like 3rd season and I don't think this show will go that far.

They are pushing it heavily though. So, who knows. I'm not familiar with AE and their deadly show cancellation procedures (like NBC, ABC, FOX)

Half of me thinks, meh could be interesting, the other half thinks Are You Serious making a prequel to Psycho

not sure if srs... psycho was never a great movie. the character, location, and the idea was awesome.

This takes the idea of the show and shows how norman bates got to where he was in the movie. and it actually works. if you have seen the movie, and if you have read the book... the 'origin' works. The relationship works... because as you have seen in the movie... Norman is a mommas boy.

Gonna have to agree to disagree on that one, but to each their own. I saw it when I was quite young and it left a lasting impression maybe.

However, I will give it a shot. With two people straight away saying its good, I will have a butchers once I finish what I am currently watching.

cheers.

the only thing that bothered me with psycho was the way the portrayed the twist.
that's the one thing i hate with those classic movies who do twist endings... some work imo like Witness for the Prosecution. but many of the hitchcockian movies with twists (like vertigo and psycho) just do a poor job with the final moments Sad everything else is nice.

Just as a whole it crashes at the end for me Sad

the show does have some very nice thriller pacing. it's surprisingly well crafted. this and hannibal are my top shows this spring. Hopefully more will come Very Happy

also dat last episode. holy!

well if the uk had a set of writers per show (like 15) instead of two to three to carry the weight... we'd have 24 episodes of dr who a year... but nope... quality over quantity Sad

Cost too we dont sped half as much money on TV shows.

Still Doctor Who looks fantastic for what it costs, and yes quality over quantity every time though Very Happy

No, you guys have talent. A lot of talent. You can make brilliant tv with less than what it takes to film a pilot for NBC. Laughing

Canada is super cheap. And it's more about quantity than quality.

just caught the season finale.

Really enjoyed the whole series, it was a pleasant surprise for me. Didn't even know about it until like the 3rd episode I think, and the only reason I checked it out was cause of some previews I saw for it.

Can't wait for season 2!

I loved the show too. Vera Farmiga = Drooling

She certainly deserves an Emmy or some sort of award for her performance in this show. Can't wait for the second season.

Finished watching season 1 , Im dissapointed...started off really good and interesting with great atmosphere and after few eps just annoying and sometimes silly with some stupid choices. Vera as Norma is so annoying for me..and dat teen drama..meh. I'll check out s2 for few eps..and than decide..

Norma is supposed to be annoying she has to have Norman wrapped around his finger. And he's supposed to feel like without him she'd die. It works. The teen drama adds to his persona that in the end the only woman in his life is his mother. He wants to break free from her spell but all the girls in his town are sluts. Except for the one interested on him. She's going to die and she'll be the first to be stuffed by him. I'm thinking season 3 Vera will die and he'll quit school to run the motel. Freddie is so good as Norman I would love a proper remake with him.
